Why was the Eclipse so Important?

Society has come a long way since the days of using the stars as our guiding light and voice of reason.

We no longer look to them for wisdom from our ancestors. We no longer use them to find our way. At least we think we don’t. We have the luxury of not having to know the science that takes place to bring some of our technology to life. Need the weather? There’s an app for that. Need directions? There’s an app for that. Want to know your horoscope? You guessed it, there’s an app for that. As we advance and progress, one must think; is it possible we may be regressing?

Most tasks, both menial and challenging, can be put into an app nowadays. We spend our days wasting away in front of the computer screen instead of being outside and living. We have forgotten how to step back and just breathe. Enjoy the beams of light that brush your check. Enjoy waking up to the birds welcoming the new day. Enjoy laying outside under the stars wondering about the mysteries of life. We have forgotten what it means to live.

We’re caught up in the now, instant gratification. Our attention span is miniscule and rapidly depleting with each new technological advancement. So, when we have an event of this magnitude, and is full of so much wonder and awe, it’s quite endearing and inspiring that we can come together and just stop what we’re doing and enjoy it. In those moments, nothing else will matter. As if for a brief moment, we can stop all the commotion, all the turmoil, all the fighting, and just come together as humans, as brothers and sisters and just be still and take in this wonder.

Very few things can do that for us and usually it’s a tragedy. It’s very clear why this coming together is important. It’s a reminder that we’re all in this together. Whatever pettiness we think is worthy of keeping us divided, there will always be something greater that will bring us back together. I think we lose sight of that. It’s easy to forget about what’s important when we have our faces buried in our phones.

It's an honor to be a part of this rare moment because we want to feel that spark of hope, that feeling you can only get when you experience something so pure in nature. We want to feel that moment of awakening, so we can take it with us and use it as a daily reminder of why we’re here. We have come such a long way, but I feel that in these advancements we have lost sight of what’s truly important. Life, love, friendship, compassion, it’s our duty to live life responsibly. I know this will be a wonderful reminder of the bigger picture that is life.

Thank you!!

Excellent post. Nice to use the concept of the eclipse as a way of sharing unity. I experienced one on my honeymoon in New Caledonia many years ago. The beach was full of photographers from around the world. The big thing for me is the opportunity to see solar waves and a better look at the Milky Way from earth without the sun overshadowing them. Oh wow that's so cool! Definitely going to have to try to see that experience some time in my life.
