Today is Milton Friedman's birthday. This idiosyncratic figure, whether you agree with him or not, is the godfather of modern conservative libertarianism.
In modern U.S. politics it would be hard to say where Friedman would fit. He was part of the conservative movement, but was a proponent of gay rights and both legal and illegal immigration, as well as being agnostic. He was also a libertarian, but believed in a progressive income tax system so that every American could meet their basic needs.
