It occurs to me that desire for consumer goods (and the resulting debt) is the primary cause of wage slavery today. Another way of looking at this situation is that it's easier than ever to live on very little labor... provided you get your desire under control.

That's a good way to look at it. You're right, the amount of labor required to live has never been lower in human history and will keep going lower as we continue getting more productive.
