Don't Quit Your Day Job (Yet), It's Rougher Than You Think Out There – Flight Attendant Jobs Starting at $25,000 Now 7x More Selective Than Harvard University, .5% Acceptance Rate

in economics •  7 years ago

As tempting as it is to throw caution to the wind and finally tell that idiot you quit, I would humbly suggest now is not a great time to do so.

Unless, of course, you like being on the very weak end of the negotiating table.

Let's not even discuss what that means about the bubble in heavily-subsidized higher education...

In yet another sign that the unemployment numbers are fabricated from whole cloth, Delta recently put out a hiring call for flight attendants, most of which start at $25,000. They asked for 1,000. They got 125,000, leaving a potential acceptance rate of .8%.

To add insult to this indicator of economic injury, this is not exactly a fast food job. Schedules are unpredictable and, apparently, not that great in general. If you aren't an attractive woman, you are at a huge handicap to get the job, and you have to know a fair deal about disaster management and deal with a fairly wide range of often pissed-off customers.

Particularly, if you work for American Airlines.

As if that weren't enough, to compete for this slightly-better-than-minimum-wage gig you must first have your resume pulled, pass a video interview submission, then go in for an in-person video. Those selected must attend an 8-week training program in Atlanta.

Any nation seeing such rabid competition for borderline minimum wage is well along the road to serfdom.

This is probably not a market to be in. If you can manage to keep your job for now, without debilitating insanity, you probably should.

Make like Wilson Phillips and try to hold on (for one more day.)

I guess I kinda made this last video link obligatory.

Hmm, so everyone knows that hosties are mostly glorified waiters (or servers as they liked to be called now). Apparently, the minimum wage in Aust is AU$694.90 a week, so AU$36,088 per annum. At the current exchange rate this is US$27,702. So you'd be better off just getting a job down at your local cafe serving $10 avocado-on-atrisan-toast brunches and lattes to middle-class suburbanites. Training is generally on the job for like the first week/fortnight and I don't remember having to do a video interview back in my hospitality-job student days.

I think you've touched on what is really my main point - job requirements, and the competition for them, are completely out of whack with the quality of the compensation and work-life balance.

im living this

You can't just compare the pay.

It's a very glamorous industry. What other job can a 20-something year old get paid to travel the world? Party in every city? A girl/boy in every port? It is a millenials wet dream.

Is being a hostie glamourous though? Or is it just perceived to be glamourous? My impression is they work a long shift catering to people who may not be that nice (especially when they've been drinking red wines for 6 hours straight and all the chicken dinners are taken. FYI, that's always the person sitting beside me), take a shuttle to an airport hotel, try and sleep and not get jetlagged, then jump on a return flight.

Guy in every port doesn't sound terrible though. We'll put that in the plus column.

An old colleague of mine in the public service used to preach "Perception IS Reality". In our current society of mass-delusion and cosmetic consumerism it pretty much holds true for most peoples version of reality....

In truth I don't think the work is very glamorous, but there aren't many jobs that would be much fun for 20-somethings so if you're going to be miserable on shift you may as well get some of the perks.

Well if you look at the Virgin ads, they generally look like they're having fun. And their uniforms are better than those awful QANTAS ones. Actually, that might be why they're smiling...

The best thing while starting out with life is to have a day job, at least until one can get oneself together enough to strike out on their own. But the problem seems to be that in today's world employers wan to pay peanuts for qualifications that's worth the size a of matured pumpkin, so sometimes I don't really blame people when they quit their day job impulsively even though it might later blow up in their faces. The fierce competition in the labor market is not helping matters too

"But the problem seems to be that in today's world employers wan to pay peanuts for qualifications that's worth the size a of matured pumpkin,"

I call it "rampant credentialism", which happens when the employer has all the power due to an "oversupply" or labor (or an "undersupply" of jobs).

" so sometimes I don't really blame people when they quit their day job impulsively even though it might later blow up in their faces. "

I don't blame them at all for quitting, I only hope they are rationally considering the likely outcomes when they do so!

It usually doesn't work out as well as it does for Michael Scott.

Vaguely Relevant:

"I call it "rampant credentialism", which happens when the employer has all the power due to an "oversupply" or labor (or an "undersupply" of jobs)."

This happens in most places around the world, it's almost as if it's a growing epidemic.

I'd say it certainly is.

I'd suggest so many applicants for flight attendants is due to the perceived lifestyle which would appeal to younger generations. Lots of free travel, sex, etc.

I disagree with your advice though. Better to be poor and free than a wealthy slave in my book. Some people can't be happy without nice things though so the less trodden path is too risky for many.

"Better to be poor and free than a wealthy slave in my book."

I'd say this is, somewhat unfortunately, a matter of opinion and the average might not agree with you. After all, look at the political system. I try to give "do no harm" advice aimed at an average person.

If you're wise enough to understand the thrust of my articles, you won't need such generalized advice. However, I do know a number of people dangerously close to quitting jobs that they will find much harder to replace than they expect...

Better to simply scale back your effort until they finally fire you, than quit in a huff. If you Peter Gibbons it enough, your job can make you the master and your employer the slave.

If job security is an issue and/or people have a mortgage or other debt to support then the best option is to find the next job BEFORE quitting the current one. I have never done this myself and I don't exactly agree with it ethically but it is the safest option and I see it all the time. Staying in a bad job, where you are miserable and playing like Peter Gibbons is just a downward spiral. When it comes to referrals and word of mouth....karma is a bitch ;)

Loyalty is no longer rewarded in todays job market. Labor is just another commodity in the eyes of most execs and bean counters. Good workers shouldn't stay in the same place too long. If workers are smart they always keep learning, get new experiences and build that resume for the next challenge (job). I reckon 2-4 years is the "Sweet Spot" for staying in any job. Much shorter and you look too flighty and are a commitment risk. Much longer and you're probably stagnating.

"I reckon 2-4 years is the "Sweet Spot" for staying in any job. Much shorter and you look too flighty and are a commitment risk. Much longer and you're probably stagnating."

Right on. I saw a study where 2 years was the most highly correlated with higher salaries.

Agree with everything else as well.

PS - Peter Gibbons was only miserable until he stopped caring. ;)

Also, screw the higher education bubble. Enrol in the school of life and teach yourself what you need to know.

Although, there's some merit to the idea that taking as much subsidized cash as possible if you have a way to avoid paying it off is certainly an option...

Student Loans will eventually have to be wiped I think...mathematically.

Wash your mouth out!

(In Australia) I've never had trouble getting a job, never been unemployed for more than 2 weeks unless by choice. Obviously there arent enough jobs out there for everyone but so many people dont know how to market themselves.
I've also found (again here in aus) so many people complain about not being able to find work but ive tried out maybe 10 labourers in the last 18 months and found maybe 2-3 actually show initiative and effort. Its a hard job to do physically but im paying well above minimum wage just over $25 an hour and still finding it hard to find decent employees.

"(In Australia) I've never had trouble getting a job, never been unemployed for more than 2 weeks unless by choice. "

I'm afraid I cannot comment intelligently on the Australian labor market, as I am a burger-eatin' American.

I can tell you the rate of applications received to interviews granted these days is almost always well under 1%. Competition for any decent job is nuts.

"actually show initiative and effort. Its a hard job to do physically but im paying well above minimum wage just over $25 an hour and still finding it hard to find decent employees."

That doesn't surprise me either. Work ethic isn't exactly heavily emphasized with the Millennial and younger generations (I say that as one of them.)

From what i've heard from a couple Muricans i know who live there the job market is pretty shot so im guessing its worse there than here.

I'd hate to be in need of work there right now.

Is it not possible to see it the other way? In a free market a lot of competition to get a job is driving the economy and innovation. At least, it is a decent job, better than being a pornstar or prostitute. They also have a upside in the potential to (being attractive) marry a richer man. Female hypergamy is probably the strongest force in the universe.

"In a free market a lot of competition to get a job is driving the economy and innovation."

I think that's the problem. It's not driving economy and innovation, it's driving higher and higher profits for the .1%, and more and more off-shored profits that pay no taxes.

I'd have to leave it up to the individual to decide if it's better than sex work, but I'd say most people would agree...although I imagine it pays a lot less.

I have a dream. In the next two years I will have managed to "win" a lot of.steems and I will have gathered a nice following, making 50$ or more per day here. Steem will be over 10 $ and Hopefully BTC and the other cryptos I hodl will also have increased. Then I won't give a shit about my current job or changing it as writting posts here will be more than enough to make a living in my country and my accumulated cryptos will also be enough to guarantee me a lifetime of laziness :D

Yeah, I have to concur with a lot of that...

"enough to guarantee me a lifetime of laziness :D"

Not quite willing to admit this yet. I like to think I'd keep busy.

Many jobs have an elementary bias on good looks, or the perceived standard of good looks. Movies, ads and media continually influence the belief of beauty.

I can't disagree with any of that!

0.008% chance I will apply for that job... I can't imagine that this is really what you want.... but everybody is different in this world... Thx for the post

I'm also guessing you may not be Delta's preferred demographic!

;-) That is above my english language skills...

Fantastic choice of song

It deserves more play than it gets!

@lexiconical - Yes, Wilson Phillips AND the Dixie Chicks, both :))

Hmm...I don't know about that latter one...maybe we could settle on Alanis or something.

that would be ironic...dont yout hink
