Jobs being eliminated by technology

in economy •  5 years ago

This month I witnessed yet another job on the line due to the advancement of technology. This time it is the waste management crew. The truck that served my street had 3 three men employed. Two to dump cans and one driver. We have new dumping equipment installed on the trucks and county provided containers for our refuse. The new device lifts and dumps the container which still requires one person to tend to. When the new trucks arrive, two jobs will be eliminated. Unless those new trucks are self driven...

I have gotten to know and care about these men over the years they have served my street. One just bought a house. These jobs are fundamental to our economy. I have seen several low-level jobs replaced by automation, toll-taker, drive through ordering and cashier, to name just a few.

However, it is not only the low-level jobs that are being replaced by new technologies. Doctors and pilots are facing the possibility of being outmoded by this trend toward AI and automation. How is this going to affect the ability for people to earn a living wage?

Now more than ever it is a good idea to begin stepping away from large corporate supply chains and move toward locally provided goods and services whenever possible. Only well-funded corporate giants will afford the new tech, so supporting the local family run businesses will guarantee jobs. Think about it.
