Nelson Mandela Centenary #BeTheLegacy
It is easy to break down and destroy. The heroes are those who make peace and build. - Nelson Mandela
The Greens' Earth Rangers were proud to join Hope for the Needy Association(HOFNA) to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day on Saturday the 21st July 2018 at St Paul’s Field in Mile 3 Nkwen, under the theme “TAKE ACTION. INSPIRE CHANGE.” and dedication #ActionAgainstPoverty
What is Nelson Mandela Day?
“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson Mandela
Mandela Day calls on us all, every day, to make the world a better place. Each year on 18 July we look back on what has been done, and forward to what will be done.
This year's Nelson Mandela International Day 2018 marks 100 years since the birth of Nelson Mandela (18 July 1918). The Centenary is an occasion to reflect on his life and legacy, and to follow his call to “make of the world a better place.”
Making every day a Mandela Day celebrates Madiba’s life and legacy in a sustainable way that will bring about enduring change.
The Madiba Talks
As early as 12:00PM, more than 50 youths had gathered at the St. Paul’s Field for the “Madiba Football Game” which started at 12:30PM with more than 75 young people present. The event started with a word of welcome which was followed by a presentation by Ngong Mirabel, a YALI Alumni who talked on the importance of young people to be role models in their communities.
Mirabel’s word was followed by a word from the Executive Director of HOFNA, Mrs. Christel Bay who drilled the young people on the importance of community service.

Then a health talk on HIV/AIDS which was presented by a Nurse from Mbingo Baptist Hospital who cautioned the young people to either abstain from sex or use a condom if they must engage in any sexual activities. She also called on the young people to add their voices to the voices of those calling for Zero new infections, Zero Stigmatization and Zero deaths from HIV/AIDS.
The Madiba Football Game
Two teams comprising of young boys and girls were made and then the referee gave a brief talk on the importance of fair play. It was time for the Madiba football game which lasted for 1 hour with the White emerging victorious in the game.
Mr. Green served as one of the assistant referees.
The HIV/AIDS Sensitization Campaign
During the game, free HIV sensitization, counseling and testing was ongoing at the corner of the field and it was a great success most young people did their tests and knew their status.

The Award of Medals
At the end of the football game, participants were awarded medals to encourage them to continue to serve as ambassadors of change in their communities.
The Birthday
Mrs Christel Bay, Founder/Executive Director of HOFNA
The event was a dual event because the Executive Director of HOFNA share the same birth date as Nelson Mandela. While we gathered to refresh the good food and drinks that were prepared for us, we also fixed our voices to sing Mrs Christel Bay a wonderful birthday song.
The Greens' SG, Nfor Yembe giving a talk on team building prior to the Birthday celebration
The cake was delicious and it was a really inspiring and wonderful event.
At the close of the day, we had more than 150 young people who came for the event and it was a great success.

Mandela! What a legacy he left! I had the privilege of hearing him speak and meeting him shortly after his release from prison, when I had Amnesty as a client. I think he would be incredibly proud of the work continuing in his name. Beautiful! :)
