EcoDesigners learn how to make Eco-Detergents
It has been an exceptionally great day at The Greens as trainees and Directors of Training of EcoDesigns gathered to acquire knowledge in the production of powder washing detergents that are eco-friendly. The training was facilitated by the Founder/Executive Director of The Greens, Ngalim Franklin - Mr Green (@dukefranky)
Why train EcoDesigners in the production of Ecodetergents?
As EcoDesigners it's our duty to minimize the environmental impact of any product that is associated with the textile industry.
Producing garments is one thing, but keeping the garments clean is another thing and we want to greatly minimize the environmental impact at any of the stages of production or usage
Everyday, the women and girls of EcoDesigns use powder washing detergents at their homes. Most often, they buy powder detergents in small plastic papers which always end up littering the environment. Besides littering the environment, the production and transportation processes of these detergents always requires a lot of energy and fossil fuels and most of these industries are responsible for a lot of pollution.
Also, the purchase of small quantities of powder detergents is costly, inconveniencing and time consuming.
These reasons explain why we are starting to empower women and girls in the production of eco-detergents, herbal oils and herbal soap.
Local production and consumption is one of the pillars of sustainable development.
By learning to produce their own eco-detergents, herbal soaps and herbal oils, the EcoDesigners will greatly be contributing to improve the state of the environment, improve their livelihood via the production and sale of their products as well as saving a lot of money.
What did we use to produce the powder eco-detergents?
We used caustic soda, potash, hydrogen, foaming agent, water and kernel oil. We soaked 1kg of the caustic soda in 4litres of water and allowed it to set for 7hours after which we added 0.4kg of potash, 15mls of Hydrogen and 33cl of forming agent and stirred untill we obtained a uniform mixture. 4 litres of kernel oil was then added to the mixture gradually and stirred untill a cream white smooth mixture was obtained.
When the cream white mixture became effectively mixed, we poured the content into container which had been lined with plastic and allowed it to set.
Tomorrow, we continue with the second phase of our powder detergent production and will definitely talk about some safety precautions, storage and marketing.
Some Environmental and Economic benefits of making your own detergents at home
- It requires no burning of fossil fuels as well as little or no amount of energy for production.
- There is very limited or no pollution during and after production.
- There is no usage of disposal plastic packaging and synthetic perfumes which could litter the environment or add green house gases into the environment.
- It's very cheap to produce large quantities which could be used for months.
- It's fun and engaging to make your own detergents at home.
Stay tuned to more green updates in the production of powder detergents.
This concept of detergent manufacturing at home is also really picking in Kenya.
Bar soaps included as well. Great to see you making a positive impact out of it. You must have such a big heart Mr.Green.
Keep Up the great work!

I am happy that we can help with the A Dollar A Day project.
As well as running the A Dollar A Day project, I also host a show on Fridays on MSP Waves Radio called The Alternative Lifestyle Show. I wondered if you would be able to come on that show sometime to talk about The Greens project.

Wonderful!
It´s cheaper and it´s better for the environment.
In Germany we can just buy lots of green detergents in our organic shops, but producing it yourself as part of a community project is even better.
More power to you!

I'm continually inspired by what you all are doing!
I'm curious- how much did all of that cost, and how many loads do you think your batch of detergent will wash?

It costs about 3500CFAF ($7) to produce one dose of powder detergents. One dose produce more than 20 litres of the powder detergents which can be used by a small household of about 4-5persons for more than 3months.
Today, we had just the training but look forward to empowering the trainees with material resources for production and sale of the products as an alternative livelihood activity. Next week we will train them in the production of herbal soaps and herbal oils. Thanks for your support and please we are ready to answer any questions.

Let there be more of THIS!! Awesome work! I have been making my own laundry liquid for a long time simply using soap nuts and kaffir limes, both of which grow easily here in Northern Thailand. But the no foaming 'thing' takes a bit of getting used to. Love what you're doing! :)

Thanks @artemislives for doing this (making your own soap). If we all can just promote local production and consumption, it could help solve a lot of environmental and economic challenges plaguing our world today.

Also I have potash and caustic soda at home im a bit cautious to use the caustic soda because of the reactive quality to it. I brought it to make soap but chickened out making the soap and the potash was actually for my garden plants but I never use it. Some ppl say that using the caustic soda isn't that natural because it's a hash chemical but I have read it goes through a chemical process of soapification but I'm still worried about using it. I heard there were other ways to make soap from Ash?

Thanks @celestialcow for your endless support. There is a lot of precautionary measures we take when using caustic soda and its true its a very harsh chemical which is being widely used in soo many industries. However, its acidity is consumed in oils and this explains after making soap, it ceases to be harsh. There are other ways to make soap using ash and i will be sharing the other ways in the days ahead.

Cheers to you all for doing this! Personally I only use plant derived detergent. This is a crucial part of reducing the waste associated with the fashion industry. Blessings and love.
