What does Respect mean to you?

in ecotrain •  5 years ago  (edited)

The word RESPECT is a subjective topic and different people can have different perspectives to it.

Here is what I think - Respect is when you respect someone for their character not for their status which can include money & Fame. I see lots of people respecting rich people even when they are nowhere respectable as per their character.

As an example, There is a senior boss who is respected by his employees in office due to the senior-junior hierarchy has no way of behaving respectfully with others when he is out of the office -Well he does not deserve respect and the little he gets is just because of his position in office. That is like demanding the respect not commanding.

I personally believe in respecting everyone when I meet them for the first time by greeting them and making them comfortable no matter where I am. Anyone having a fine character will always be respected by others around him\her.

People of character will never need to show off or ask for respect, it would come naturally. Does not matter how many degrees you have, how much money you have and how beautiful you are - For genuine respect there is one thing that you need to possess without any questions and that is CHARACTER.

Knowledge will give you power, but character respect.

How do you command (not demand) the respect of your friends and peers?

Through Self-respect

Self Respect is the basic tool to command respect from others. If you don't respect yourself, no one will respect you. I have met people who ridicule themselves, insult themselves while talking, they don't like themselves and talk bad about their own selves. Sometimes its ok if they are sad and going through rough patches but if they are doing it every time then they need to stop. Because it impacts their outlook for others in the long go, no one would take them seriously and might dis-respect them.

Respect yourself and others will respect you.

Who do you respect? Why do you respect them? Do you feel respected? These are just some of the questions that come to mind when i think about the word respect. It can be so many things to so many different people, but we all know what it means. It is about how we relate to other people, the world, and everything within it.. even inanimate objects! It is also about ourselves, and self respect is an important quality to have. So this week I want to dive into Respect. Isn't it interesting how some people can command respect without even seeming to try. Is it the way they stand, or the confidence they emanate? What does makes some people more respected than others, and how do we get it for ourselves? How can we command respect from others for who and what we are?

Ecotrain has come up with this interesting mind boggling question. Check here and share your perspective.

Respect earned just with position and status of your financial background is fake, it fades away as fast as it comes. Self-Respect as you say is the most important and also the base for us to decide how we are going to treat other people.

Exactly , rightly summed up Nainaz. :)

Good explanation. I really believe self-respect is one of the major thing we should follow in our life.

Exactly :)

Great post. Money nor riches commands any respect in my eyes. It’s character that matters in all things. No need for ego - simply being confident in life and what one does.

Yeah character is everything.

Respect is earned, if you are unable to respect yourself how will you be able to respect another.

Yes respect yourself and then only things will follow.

I like what you say about respecting yourself. That can be really hard for some people! Once we understand that lesson we can be happier, and treat other people with respect too. A lovely response. X

Yeah self respect comes as the first and the finest tool. Thanks for stopping by riverflows :)

Indeed all respect must start with self, until we respect ourselves we will never really understand the true meaning of respect. Like you said there are almost fake levels of respect, for those that are higher up in your work for example, it is expected, but respect is not something you should be forced to give. Great answer @vibesforlife, I will be answering this wonderful question too xx

Yeah self respect is important and then fake respect is everywhere.

I will look forward to your answer, thanks for stopping by :)

thank you, pleasure all mine :)

When it comes to respect, you are very correct when you say people have their different perspectives about the topic. When you respect yourself, others will respect you. It is a simple principle, self-respect commands the respect of others.
Nice post

Yeah self respect is the basic way to command respect, thanks for stopping by :)

Interesting thoughts, @vibesforlife. I never cared too much about earning respect. I just live my life without paying too much attention of what others think of me.

By the way, if you had my languages school teacher you'd be crucified for starting an answer with:

Respect is when you respect someone for their character not for their status which can include money & Fame

She'd tell you right away: you cannot define a word using that very same word! Oh, boy, you can't imagine how many times we've heard that line! Eventually, we learnt it! 😁

Living without caring what others think - is exactly what we need these days to attain peace of mind. Good that you can master this art. :)

hahahaha on that teacher note, I am laughing :)
