It is rather unfortunate that drug abuse and its intake have become rampant and increasing astronomically among students nowadays without due attention being accorded to the unhealthy and unwholesome development by parents, teachers and even the concerned government agencies. This trend is significantly responsible for the sharp increase in crime and criminality within the country as most of the perpetuators of criminal acts usually carry out their dastardly acts under the influence of drugs.

Drug control and prevention ought to occupy a central position in government programmes to thoroughly resolve the multidimensional security challenges facing the nation. The students protest, cult activities, kidnappers, terrorists, armed robbers,and rapists in most cases indulge in the intake of one drug or the other before they can actively carry out their negative assignments. As such, campaign against drug abuse and intake should be of priority to the social society.

Drugs are expected to be used under the prescription of a physician as medicine to treat and prevent disease. There are other forms of drugs which are regarded as illegal or illicit drugs, in most cases they are not prescribed or recommended by physicians.

Drug abuse can be as a result of the following:

• Peer influence or pressure
• Socio-economic challenges
• Lack of self confidence
• For relaxation or pleasure
• Emotional distress
• Stimulant

A drug addict in most cases is always in possession of drugs at any point in time. All drugs have a peculiar odour and those who abuse them carry the trademarks in terms of odour.
Drug addicts usually suffer physical deterioration, their strength and physical look diminish with time. There is also a tendency of memory failure and changes in behaviour pattern.

To put an end to drug abuse, the following points should be considered

• Social movement against illicit drug intake
• Increase in employment opportunities
• laws guiding production, sales, purchase and intake of all forms of drugs should be enforced
• Agencies against drug abuse should be enforced and strengthened.
