Definition Of Land

  • In general sense land means
  1. any part of the earth's surface not covered by a land of water; the part of the earth's surface occupied by continents and island;

  2. an area of ground with specific boundaries;

  3. rural or farming areas as contrasted with urban areas.

According to Collins Dictionary of Law, Land includes not only physical surface of land but everything growing on or underneath that surface, anything permanently affixed to the surface (such as a buildings) and the airspace above that surface. It includes not only the soil or water but always any water,a pond, for example, being regarded as land covered by water.

According to section 2(16) of the State Acquisition and Tenancy Act, 1050 'land' means the land which is cultivated,uncultivated or covered with water at any time of the year and includes benefit to arise of land,houses or buildings and also things attached to the earth or permanently fastened to anything attached to the earth.

Therefore, land legally includes all houses and other buildings standing or built on it; and whatever id on a direct line between the surface and the centre of the earth, such as mines of metals and fossils.
