My seventh week of @matkodurko's What did I learn yesterday? challenge, based on an idea by Tim Ferriss ('Tools of Titans' book).
Learn & Earn Week 12

  • Mon 4 - A music improvisation documentary series, On The Edge, which I recorded off the TV in the 90s was based on a book by Derek Bailey.
The documentary is essential viewing, albeit a bit slow moving. It's all on YouTube of course.

  • Tue 5 - The international arms trade now smuggles weapons disguised as potatoes.

  • Wed 6 - HMV has been rescued again but is closing it's Oxford Street branch that's been there since 1921.
"According to real estate adviser, Altus Group, HMV saw its business rates bill for its flagship store on Oxford Street rise to £1,308,150 this financial year, almost double the amount it was paying before the controversial revaluation came into effect in April 2017." Source

Looking at a story about Music Industry turmoil led me to this graphic on Bloomberg.
It's a few years old, but shows the changes in music format popularity up to 2015. USA only.
Music Sales Source
A more recent interactive graphic for 2017 shows:
Physical: $5.2b (36%)
Digital, excluding streaming: $2.8b (19%)
Streaming: $6.6b (45%)
Total: $14.6b
I'd like to see an extension of this graphic, to see the difference in CD sales versus vinyl. And, whoever it is buying music on cassettes - get over yourself!

-Thu 7 - A study shows that there was an increase in American women seeking long-term contraception options immediately after the last presidential election. This was previously reported without data. The new data is a bit too focused, but there is a definite, er, uplift in the graph.

  • Fri 8 - the joys of creating a limited company...
Register the name (wait 24 hours for confirmation)
    Confirm shareholders (me)
    Confirm directors (me)
Open a business bank account (print out form and put in post!)
Find an accountant who is a) taking new clients and b) not on holiday after the January tax filing rush.

Sun 10 - Learned rules to Merchant of Venus. Can now write a review.

Nice! What company are you founding?

Just a sole trader limited company. It's a well established UK tax dodge. I'm not an accountant but it reduces the costs of the company I contract to and I pay less tax because I'm a company. Although, as we know from the Americans, companies are people.

I saw that the new HMV owner wants to try and save the flagship store, but it must be so expensive to be there. They still have a shop near where I work, but I just don't buy that many CDs these days.

I'm so about the Oxford Street branch - I was shopping there back in the 90s and again this year. They're going to focus on vinyl so I'll be buying less there I think.
