Examination.....

Examination, they say, is the true test of knowledge...how true?

In my own opinion,....it can only be true if done at short intervals...because i see it as a form of assessment to check the level of understanding of the learner, for the following reasons.......

My experience as a learner
I tend to pass an examination regularly when put under regular study and assessment, either doing it on my own or with a Teacher.

Real life story
As a geography student in SS3, we had a note of almost 10 topics, with long write ups and diagrams. I read that note and assessed myself regularly. On the Examination day I wrote so well that I asked for extra sheet. I scored 97%. The Teacher was amazed....

My experience as a Teacher
As a private Teacher and school Teacher, my pupils or students do well in school when I am able to assess them regularly because before the main school examination, their weak points must have been handled properly.

Real life story
I had a private pupil who always failed a subject called Quantitative reasoning in school. I got the text book for her, and we did over 25 exercises before the examination day, and finally she passed it. I was paid by her parent earlier than the agreed date. (Lol).

I propose that Teachers should adopt a means of assessing learners at regular intervals in order to properly test their knowledge of the subject and be able to help weak learners instead of waiting to follow the school timetable as school timetables are for organisational structures.

I still propose that learners should form the habit of assessing themselves to help them check their knowledge of the subject.

We have so many people with certificates these days but have little or no knowledge. This has affected our educational system so badly.

However this situation can be salvaged when everyone learns to face the fact about learning and assessment as I proposed.....

You know, i actually do teach too and i have also learned that regular check-ups work better. Instead of compounding lectures and expecting the student to remember it all in one day.

If every teacher can seize the power of regular exams or mock exams...life would be a better place.

I could remember vividly back then when I was teaching. My students/pupils fail my assessment each time I set a test, and I do frown at it, little did I know that they've almost forgotten everything before the test.
I then realized back then how my teacher felt each time I fail his assessment.
Good proposal dear, I just wish it can be adopted.
Me self school don tire me, every time test..

Lol
