Excel Tutorial - Chapter 2: Selecting Cells

The following actions are based on ‘demo.xlsm’. Now move to the tab ‘Selecting cells’ and click on the cell ‘B4’, which is the position of the letter ‘a’.

Actions Effects
Hold ‘Ctrl’, and then click on ‘f’. Any cells that you click on while holding ‘Ctrl’ will be selected. In this case, ‘a’ and ‘f’ will be selected.
Hold ‘Shift’, and then click on ‘f’. A rectangular block of cells with the original cells and the newly clicked cell as two vertices will be selected. In this case, ‘a’ to ‘f’ will be selected.
Press ‘Ctrl + arrow keys’. The selector will jump to the boundaries according to the specified direction. If you press ‘Ctrl + Down’, ‘g’ will be selected.
Press ‘Shift + arrow keys’. The selector will extend by one row or column according to the specified direction. If you press ‘Shift + Down’, ‘a’ and ‘d’ will be selected.
Press ‘Ctrl + Shift + arrow keys’. The selector will extend till the boundary according to the specified direction. If you press ‘Ctrl + Shift + Down + Right’, ‘a’ to ‘i’ will be selected.
Press ‘Ctrl + End’ The selector will go to the intersection of the furthest used row and column. In this case, E13 will be selected. Note that a cell is said to be ‘used’ even if it is formatted but there is no value in it. So this function can help you to check whether you have made unnecessary formatting which would waste storage space.
Press ‘Ctrl + Spacebar’

OR click on the letter ‘B’

The current column will be selected. In this case, column B will be selected
Press ‘Shift + Spacebar’

OR click on the number ‘4’

The current row will be selected. In this case, row 4 will be selected
Enter the range in the circled area The corresponding region will be selected. For example, if you enter ‘B4:D6, E10’, ‘a’ to ‘i’ together with ‘x’ will be selected.
Enter “myRange” in the circled area ‘j’, ‘k’ and ‘l’ are selected. This is called a named range. You can name a region by selecting the required region and type the desired name in the circled area. You can access the ‘Name Manager’ by going to the tab ‘Formula’.
