History:
A residential high school and 16 institutions make up the University of North Carolina, a state-run higher education system in North Carolina, United States.

A prominent research institution with 14 colleges and schools, including schools of law, medicine, and dentistry, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is home to the Kenan-Flagler Business School and the School of Information and Library Science. About 31,000 students are enrolled in total. The second significant research university in the state is North Carolina State University in Raleigh, which has a 79,000-acre (32,000-hectare) research forest on its grounds. The school prioritises engineering, science, and technology and has more than 36,000 students. It also runs veterinary medicine and natural resources colleges.

The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (previously Pembroke State University) was established as a school for Native Americans; the other universities in the system include Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State, North Carolina Central, and Winston-Salem State.
