Wondering what certification would get you a decent paying job without requiring a degree? Or how about certification that will allow you to work and get paid well in a number of countries? Here's one that caught my eye recently: CELTA or Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults.

CELTA, TESOL, TEFL...

As someone who isn't familiar with the teaching English scene, i was a little overwhelmed by the number of possible certifications out there. From what i've seen, most of the certifications have some form of practical component in a classroom setting to them. Unfortunately this means that getting the certification is going to be a bit more pricey than some of the IT certifications which you can just take online.

The numbers

Monthly earnings - $4,500
Cost of certification - $5,900 in Singapore / $2,900 in Thailand (including accommodation)

So if you take the certification in Singapore, you'll break even in your second month and if you decide to go get it done in Thailand, you'll break even on your first month back. The great thing about the job is that it doesn't involve much overtime or bringing work back home.

Putting the numbers into perspective, a fresh graduate here would probably make around $2,800 to $3,500 a month, so to be able to pull in $4,500 without overtime is pretty attractive. The downside though is that it doesn't look like there is much career progression. This seems to be very much a job, just a means to an end. Not bad if you want to put some spare change in your pocket every month too.

WOW! Really interesting and great job! Yeah! It's good that it doesn't involve much overtime or bring work back home.... ;)

It is absolutely true--teaching English in such great demand!
It is not difficult for native English-speaking people from developed country such as US, Canada, UK, etc. to get a decent job without degree. Although the Chinese schools require a degree in their "job posting", it is not a must. Until my late American husband passed away in China, I suddenly realized the reason why English-teaching is so expensive/noble is not English itself, but the nationality.
I have a Nigerian friend whose sister is a professional English teacher in Nigeria with bachelor degree. But the trouble is China government doesn't offer Chinese working visa to Nigerians, and most of Chinese schools only hire white people.
So your face color and nationality is a must to obtain the decent English-teaching job in developing country where most of people can't follow English such as China, Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan, maybe including Japan, etc. instead of your degree and certificates.
Most of common Chinese only earn a little salary(200-500 dollar monthly), very poor. but now the average monthly salary of foreign teachers in China is about 3,000 dollar!

Haha i heard about white privilege in China. I'm a native speaker but sadly i'm not white :(

I feel it depends on the nationality. Singapore is such a wealthy and clean country compared to China. I really feel it is not a good choice for people from developed country to move to China. I feel regretted to let my American husband come to China. It truns out that it is a big mistake.
But for young people, it should be a great experience to teach English in China for a short time. It is always wonderful to get chance of tasting another kind of culture and politcal system and different environment. If anyone is interested in teaching English in China, please feel free to contact me. I would like to offer guide and good recruitment information for them.

I wish i could earn that pay in SGD in Malaysia..

Haha i have a few friends doing that. Most do a daily commute from JB but some rent a 'weekday room' for about $500 a month.

I feel like it's not worth the jam every day.. I'm more of convenience > income

I think so too but people do crazy things for 25,000 - 30,000 RM per month

Thats like closer to 10k sgd haha

Yeah, they're all with about 6-7 years experience in finance/marketing.

Thats a nice way of earning extra income. The pay is good.

It is always attractive to be paid with SGD haha. 4.5k SGD whoa.. already 12k plus. My profession's fresh grad less than that figure though.
