Farmers' Markets, Bulgaria

in education •  6 years ago  (edited)
Meeting those, whose hands and effort were implied in the possibility to serve clean food on the table – the tomatoes, the parsnip, the apples; the hands that produced the cheese and took care of the bees to derive most purified honey for the winter tea is an exciting encounter and it is wonderful to see the Farmers’ Markets gaining on popularity lately, as they are introducing the culture of the delicious and healthy food while the sustainable consuming becomes more and more efficient. The first successfully restored Farmers’ Market was open in 2013 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria to set firm bases for a new type of cooperation among the producers in the country.

Eat Locally

Promoting environmentally-friendly life values, nature protection, responsible and resource efficient behavior preserving the common natural heritage are concepts communicated though the initiative to support local producers on a regional level among large and diverse groups enabling the community to broaden perspective through active cooperation while evolving from local and regional context to a network of affirmed common values. From the very start this is an ambitious initiative and a completely exciting challenge, is driving the community to a more defined collaboration among the people in it.

Introducing new community cooperation approaches is a long-term process.

Local Food Worldwide

The idea behind the Farmers’ Market is to provide a detour to better local food and to support the local producers. The facilitated access to quality produce sold by the farmers themselves is not only building potential for the community, but also is an opportunity to enjoy the market days in having small chat on food with the locals. With a walk around the abundance of goods at the marketplace, one gets the impression that such places could be referred as of living breathing organism of the community.

The Farmers’ Market in Plovdiv, Bulgaria is a city event, which is now a place to meet the local producers of clean food with the people. It is the wealth display for fresh fruit and vegetables, cottage cheese and Kashkaval, delicious yeast bread, home-made and freshly baked biscuits, fancy jars of jam and lyutenitsa, tea and various savouries, wine, patisserie and vegan products. The initiative is launched and supported by the Local Food foundation and it is underpinned by the Plovdiv Municipality – central area. It is a part of the Slow Food Plovdiv convivium and also a part of the Plovdiv 2019 ECOC - Plovdiv – European Culture Capital 2019 programme.

Stay focused...Eat clean.

Farmers' Markets

Based on promoting the reasonable use of the natural resources by means of the traditional approaches merging new green technologies, the Farmers’ Market concept intends to set certain behavioral patterns and attitudes at each individual and particularly among the youngest thus forming an awareness of a life in line with the environment.

On an also important note...

A topic near and close to my heart, Ravi. I think this growing worldwide thanks to people's awareness of healthier food. And I love supporting local farms and businesses - so important for all of us. Makes our communities strong and self sustaining.

Great post

Exactly what I love the most about the farmers markets - the self sustaining opportunities they provide along with the clean food.

I really love our farmers market. I miss them not being outside my front door on Saturdays. Silly cold seasons.

You are always welcome to Plovdiv. They'll have a Christmas Farmers Market. Voila!

Oh, that is wonderful. I wish we had one here. I miss very fresh veggies.

Thank you very much, @c-squared! I'm obliged.

Farmers markets are a great way to ensure good wholesome food, and also support small business's working hard to provide quality products for a reasonable price. It is often hard for small business's to compete against the aggressive pricing of big Supermarket chains, but what people forget or do not realise is the quality of taste is far better - and so often you pay very little more to get a far better product - and also help support real people instead of big business.
