Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) is a native Araceae family of Southeast Asia or southern Central Asia that has been cultivated as the main food ingredient prior to rice. Today taro grows throughout West India, West and North Africa, Southern and Central China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, and islands in the Pacific Ocean (including Hawaii).
