The Nigerian Educational system (computer science)
Its delightful for any newly admitted undergraduate students and parents in Nigeria because of its huge population of aspiring university candidates, the secondary school certificate, the UTME and the post UTME. I must acknowledged the fact that going through these examination isn't easy a bit.
After passing through these thorough screening and at the end of one's degree or diploma, its quite disheartened that our products can't compete in the industrial world. The reason being traced back to the University curriculum, taking computer science as a case study. Most Nigerian university teaches programming languages such as COBOL, BASIC, FORTRAN, PASCAL. Etc
All of the aforementioned programming languages are not relevant to the real environment. However, it offers little programming knowledge. There was an argument that some of our employed university lecturers are just theoretical knowledgeable and even them cannot offer much in a real computer environment, which brings about asking questions in regards to our graduates in the country. Recently I was opportuned to work as an intern in a software company located in Lagos. When I checked the services being offered and the kinds of PL being used to develop softwares. I was very disappointed with my university curriculum! I want to use this medium to ask the Nigerian university commission to revisit the whole practical varsities curriculum in other for our university graduates to be relevant in the labor market.
Tessy!
