Hey friends! @bethalea here again to revisit an oldie but a goodie; Seven Card Stud.
Seven Card Stud
Seven card stud is historically one of the most popular poker games. The player is dealt seven cards in a two-down, four-up, one-down pattern. The goal is still to have the best five card hand, however.
Stud is generally played with an ante which is related to the size of the bets allowed. Usually, Stud is played as a limit game, so for instance if you’re playing a $1/$2 Limit game, the ante would be $0.15.
Stud institutes the ‘bring-in’, which is known as ‘forced action’, much like the blinds are in Hold’em and Omaha. The bring in for Stud occurs after third street; after the two face down hole cards and one face up. The person with the lowest face up card is responsible for the bring in, and the play goes clockwise from there, around the table.
Betting continues like that, with the person with the lowest hand showing being responsible for the bring in and the betting continuing from them, clockwise. Again, the winner in Seven Card Stud is the person with the BEST Five-Card Hand.
Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo
This is where I get all kinds of confused! This is the exact same game described above, except that it’s opposite. You’re still dealt your hand in the two-down, four-up, one-down pattern, and still dealt the first three cards - third street - and the person with the lowest card showing is responsible for the the ‘bring in’ and play begins.
The difference comes on fourth street, where it is the person with the HIGHEST card showing who goes first with either a check or bet, and the round proceeds from there. Fifth, sixth and seventh or the River go the same way, with the person with the highest hand showing going first. The winner of the Hi pot is the person with the best Hi hand and the Lo pot goes, surprise, surprise! To the person with the lowest hand. Remember, the low hand is 8 or lower:
Remember that in Seven Card Stud Hi/Lo, there is an ‘eight or better’ requirement to win the low, so a player must have an unpaired five-card hand that consists of all cards less than or equal to an 8. If no player can meet this requirement, no low qualifies.
