I really dislike Trump as not just a politician but a human being. I've never voted for him and never would. Because of this, I'm sorta sick of feeling the need to defend him from unhinged characterization of him as Hitler v. 2.0. like... Y'all have lost your minds.
He's a pathological liar likely leading an immoral life. He says mean, stupid stuff. His economic outlook is protectionist populist nationalism bullshit. He speaks in slogans that fit in bumper stickers but fall apart under simple scrutiny. He's certainly not libertarian or libertarian adjacent.
But he's, like...a dude. He believes whatever he believes, and often in the moment seems to believe things that simply aren't true. He's not the antichrist. For politicians, he's... average on the stuff that matters?
The amount of people who I normally think are rational that have just gone over the deep end over him is pretty excessive, and I just don't get how they take the words they say seriously. I'm opposed to him because I can't trust him (a politician being untrustworthy, imagine that), because he's got some authoritarian impulses, because he's too much of a weak bitch to address needed entitlement reform, and because of his handling of COVID/support of Fauci.
But I'm not worried about him putting Jews in camps, sending the military or justice department against his opponents, destroying democracy, ruining the Republic, any of that. When he was in office, he failed to address entitlements, didn't get us into new wars while not ending the ones we were in, overreacted to a virus... But he didn't try to start a fourth Reich or something. A second Trump presidency wouldn't be that much different than a Kamala one. It's really not that serious, much less "the most important election of our lifetime"TM.
