History of the Electric Bicycle: Originally Invented in 1895(!)

Long time followers who watched as I assembled my own electric bicycle bit by bit may have wondered along the way: Exactly how recent an invention is the electric bicycle? After all, electric cars were in wide use during the early 1900s. Surely someone though to put an electric motor on a bicycle prior to that?

source

Indeed so. The earliest record of electric bicycle prototypes date back to 1895. A flurry of related patents followed for every type of propulsive arrangement used on modern ebikes: Hub motors, mid drive motors, belt drives and so on between 1895 and 1899 (the date that the bicycle in the picture up top was demonstrated).

source

From a certain standpoint, it's amusing how little has changed. The bike above ran on a 48 volt battery bank, as most ebikes do today. It had a one horsepower motor (750 watts) which is today the legal limit for ebike motors in much of the United States.

Mind you, the "safety bicycle" only hit the scene in 1880. Safety bicycles are the modern type of bicycle with two equally sized wheels. Prior to that, the standard bicycle had one enormous front wheel and a tiny rear wheel, with no chain, aka a Penny Farthing:

source

To go from penny farthings to the first electric bicycles in fifteen years' time is somewhat staggering, if you ask me. It just goes to show how explosively quick technological progress can leap forward once all of the necessary innovations neccessary for it are in place.

source

Development continued, though electric bicycles remained a luxury item due to the high cost of the batteries and other components. The bicycle above was sold during the 1930s by Philips, still using the time tested lead acid batteries with little improvement since 1895.

What an experience that would have been, to own such a forward-thinking machine so early in history. You'd have been like a man from the future, scooting through antiquated streets past all manner of old timey shops and cafes on your dandy electric velocipede. No doubt the ends of your handlebar mustache would be flapping merrily in the breeze.

source

It really is a beautifully simple machine which has been with us for ~120 years, only recently exploding into widespread use (in particular in Asian markets) due to the falling cost of electronic components and batteries. I wonder what Hosea W. Libbey, who filed the first electric bicycle patent in the US (patent no. 596,272) would think of that.

Yes it was documented in 1890 first under US patent and then in 1895 it was propelled with electric motor.

Thanks

This is something most of the people dont know what they mean by safety cycles...and I had some opportunity to work in safety deptt of a cycle company and there read this from some books.

And now I can see those lines in your article.

Thank you...steem on and stay blissful....

How often do you sit around wishing we lived in a post Tesla world instead of a post Edison reality?
I bet it's a lot. I know it's a lot for me.

Every day. It's the world I am trying to create for myself. You might notice a familiar face among the stickers on my bike:

The history of electric bicycles is very interesting. However, this one made me laugh and for a second my head just kissed the wall behind me because I was busy having a very good laugh. :) It's true, everything in this world comes with a price.

@alexbeyman,
Dude actually I didn't aware about this evolution of Electric Bicycle! This is pretty amazing! In 1895 people tried this concept and it seems worked too! Wow that's amazing!

Cheers~

I am also socked.. Electric bicycle was already invented in 1895...
Strange...
Good.

That was pretty cool, I had no idea they have been around for that long.

The electric car was invented a little earlier: 1886. For a time, electric cars were popular because internal-combustion engines were primitive and electrical was easier to use. The legacy aftereffects can be seen in electric trollies, which were invented around the turn of the last century and are still competitive with buses.

Fun Fact: Trolley companies were called "traction" companies; they were named after the traction motor used in the trolleys.

Huh, neato.

That's really cool! Any idea how they protected the battery from the rain? I could imagine there were some safety hazards back then with the weather - especially since it looks like the battery source is exposed.

Thanks for the fun read!

I think they just didn't ride if it was raining out, haha. The simplest protective measure of all.

Guess so. I can just imagine so many poor unlucky souls who got caught in a storm. Oh well. Trial and error has made us learn and evolve.

Wow, I definitely didn't think the idea/design goes back that far. That's honestly kinda crazy if you think about it. I dunno why electric bikes took so long to gain any popularity, I think they're a pretty nifty design that is practical while still being pretty cool at the same time.

Thank you so much for sharing the history of bicycle. It is really interesting to read it. In many countries like China it is still used by countless people to save energy and to make environment pollution-free.

The invention of the lithium Ion battery changed everything.
but WAIT..there's more.
new battery technology coming down the pike will be as much better than Lithium Ion as lithium Ion is better than lead acid.

Probably. But in my opinion we hardly need it. The problem with lithium ion is not the capacity, as proven by the new Tesla Roadster with its 600 mile range. It's also not the longevity, as long term owners of both Tesla and Volt (which both use liquid cooling for their batteries) will attest that if the cells are kept in the optimal temperature range, they will last the lifetime of the car.

That means the only remaining barrier is price. In every other respect lithium ion is good enough for cars. Appropriate, given that the last name of their inventor is "Goodenough".

economies of scale and price of raw materials.
the more batteries made..the cheaper they get.
the cheaper "stuff' they're made of..the cheaper yet.
several new battery technologies are in the Lab as we speak that meet both requirements.
the problem is commercialization
that takes money and time.

I predict solar boats in the next few months
(I'm building one)
and solar other stuff real soon.
the cheaper, lighter, more powerful, (etc) the faster it will spread.
and feed upon it's own success.
think 'moores law'...on steroids.

I always find it amazing when I learn what I thought was newer technology actually ends up being really old. Like bio diesel or wood gasification. It just seems bizarre that you can go almost 100 years with very little progress in an area of technology.

It's crazy the progress that can be stifled in the interest of making a buck.

Sometimes I think there is a bit of collusion to stifle technology. Most of the time there seems to be one technology that works better and the other alternatives are dropped and forgotten about. Unfortunately, it is hard to know how far you can take a certain technology when no work has been done on it in decades.

When designer of the bicycle is mad at the world and want to take revenge

Means science was already flourished during those days as well, and we just got the the present version as an updated one, but the concept was already in place since 1895.

Thank you and Have a great day.

I thought this was going to be one of your fake history posts at first...
Also didn't realize these were around that long. People on campus use electric bicycles all the time.

even though we have bikes i was not aware of the history of it..and i was not even bothered to know it..but when i read this i felt it is very interesting to know about it :)

Alex - I like this bicycle... I didn't know the 1st electric bic invention happened in last 1800's... Valuable article for all the eco friend communities...

+W+

Those guys with the super huge unicycles probably got all the ladies.

You know it. Just look at their mustaches, too. "Would you like a bicycle ride...or a mustache ride?" Probably when the saying was invented, I will guess based on nothing at all.

Haha this was like a Lamborghini back then

Maybe I should get a bike too. I like the one with two little wheels and a giant one in the middle. The one I had when I was a child was the best one!

No doubt the ends of your handlebar mustache would be flapping merrily in the breeze.

That was like, being the ultimate-coolest guy in town, I am sure.

I'm sorry but e-bikes are for old people. thats what "drunkcyclist" on instagram told me

He doesn't know shit, and I could beat him up...(in street fighter II turbo)

Now the era is changed by science. But we can't forget our history.Bicycles are improve day by day finally it work by engine.
So it is legend ,It is big history. You blog express it very nicely.Carry on your activity

Riding the stairs is very enjoyable
