Why don't more people drive EV's (electric vehicles)

in electriccar •  8 years ago

Firstly I must say , I drive an electric vehicle myself and although its not a Tesla I love it to bits.

Electric cars are so smooth and quite and Quick...... Yes i said quick, not fast but quick . The speed Limit in the UK is 70mph and it does more than that comfortably.
The acceleration from a standing start would even surprise even a Porsche driver up to about 45mph.

Currently I am on my holidays with the family stopping in a caravan site in Scotland, and yes we drove in the electric car all the way, and yes it is further than the cars actual range but its not a problem.
My car doesn't have a massive range span , its about 80 miles, but with kids in the car and a dog its about as far as i want to drive before having to exit the car for a brain recharge.. at that point , just plug the car into a rapid charger and 20-30 mins later you can carry on your merry way.
First thing i did when i got to my destination was plug my car into the normal plug socket in the caravan and topped up the charge.

The total cost for me to drive about 150 miles is a massive £0......
Guess how much to go home .. yes that's right £0

So If they are so cheap to run, why are more people not moving to EV's? Personally I believe it because people are worried about running out of charge, or having a long journey... It really isn't a problem unless you do really high mileages most days, Most people don't do anywhere near 70-80 miles every day anyway.

I don't pay road ta either, and in most places where you charge you don't pay for parking either.....

In Texas we do.

Having never been to Texas I wouldn't know , Our city's and Towns are much more compact in Britain/Europe and those are the sort of places you would normally drive EV's. , Im just saying it doesnt have to be that difficult.
Gas in the UK is probably 5 or 6 times more expensive than it is in the USA, so it makes it expensive to drive large distances.

My uncle has a ranch. Fifty or sixty miles range is barely adequate to check the fenceline.

50- 60 mile range???? at least 80 miles, and thats for older cars like my 2014 Leaf.
once you get there, plug in to a wall socket.

not many wall sockets out in the middle of a ranch.

In my opinion there are a lot of reasons why people still prefer petrol cars:

  • You already mentioned the range which is a huge point. Altough you might be right that most people would have for there daily drives it is still a problem if you take a longer journey - yes you can charge it on the way but who wants to wait 20 minutes until your battery is full. Not to forget that the range reduce drastically if you drive faster than 80 mile ...
  • In my opinion the most useful place for an electrical car is the city but the problem is that there is not enough infrastructure to charge all the cars. I know it at least from the cities around Linz, Austria - charging stations are very very rare and the majority of people don't have a private parking space with electrical source
  • last but not least electrical cars are not as "green" as they seem to be. Most of the energy is produced with coal-fired power stations which leads to very high CO2 emmisions. If i remember correctly than there are just 3 countries which supplies their cars with renewable energy (the Scandinavian countries)

I only make a long distance journey 2 or 3 times a year, so almost all of my driving is withing the range, The Infrastructure in the UK is pretty decent in the respects of Most Motorway services have rapid chargers, and it only set to get better as a new law of all fuel stations will have to have a charging station attached too.
as regards to Green, I mainly charge at home, I have solar panels so that helps me to be Greener.
Its not for everyone yet but If people had a drive in one im sure they would change there mind.

well people don't agree with the ideea yet, because its not great value for money...you pay up to 20 thousand dollars for an electric car that wouldn't have the confornt of a gas car with the same price...but Elon Musk will get the electric cars revolutionised and next year the new Tesla Model 3 will be released, a semi-luxury car with a range of almost 300 mile and a starting price of 30 thousand dollars. Anyway, right now, electric cars are still a new thing, and aren't that well developed, but my guess...in the next 10-20 years electric cars will outnumber petrol cars due to Technology advancements

The human is a creature of habit, change takes us out of our comfort zone. As a matter of fact, when the very first cars were made, they were made with a holder for a buggy whip! Give it time or another gas shortage like the 70's and people will move more and more to electric cars : )

Thanks for that.. you are totally correct .

funny thing...here in texas it's not unusual to go a hundred and fifty miles (one way) just to go shopping. When I was a kid I used to go fifty miles just to get an icecream cone. (Dairy Queen..back then dipped cones were GOOD)

I think a big part of the electric car issue is the range and price point of buying a car with good range. It is hard to take a road trip in an electric car other than a Tesla with their super charger network. I have my Model 3 reservation and will not mind the range since I do most of my travel local. If I do go on a road trip, I will not mind taking a 30 min rest ever 3-4 hours to charge.
