Electric Dreams - New Sci-Fi Series Coming Soon!

Philip K. Dick is one of my favorite Science Fiction writers. His vast imagination created concepts and worlds that captured my imagination decades ago. Many of his works have been transferred to the screen. I had the pleasure of writing on a website with one of his wives a few years back. The geek in me was excited by even that minor connection to the author.

If you are not familiar with Dick's books, you probably better know them by their movie names. Electric Sheep is a reference to his book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep which you may not recognize as readily as Blade Runner. The latter being the movie based on the book. Others included Total Recall, Screamers, Paycheck, Minority Report , Adjustment Bureau and Amazon's recent series The Man in the High Castle.

According to IMDb, it appears that eight episodes are already "in the can." The title would suggest that the series is based on the Bladerunner film, but IMDb indicates it is an anthology. Dick had quite a few short stories, so it could be an anthology of his shorts. Or it could be a series that intersects with his shorts. I think the former is more likely as it appears that each of the eight episodes listed was directed by a different director. It also appears that quite a few writers participated indicating that each episode is probably done by a director/writer team and not intertwined necessarily with the others.

I love science fiction. And Philip K. Dick is the gold standard in the genre. I am a bit concerned that the series has numerous directors because it may have an affect on the continuity and overall quality of the series. On the other hand, the source material stands on its own merit. I can only hope they do it justice.

The series seems to be a collaboration between Amazon and Bravo. I was very impressed with Amazon's work on High Castle, but was a little bit disappointed with the second season. Since that season was wholly fabricated and this new series is based on original works, I hold out hope that it will deliver some sensational binge watching (Amazon often releases the entire season on the same day). One thing is certain, I am eagerly awaiting the release of this new series!

Sounds fantastic. Actually in tv shows it doesn't matter who is the director, only who the showrunner is. Directors are less important in tv, unlike in the cinema and they usually change every episode and no one notices. So as long as they have a good show runner it's all good.

I hope so. I like continuity. It appears all eight episodes may be done. So we are just waiting on Amazon to drop them on us. I think they dropped Season 2 of High Castle in December last year, so that may be the time frame to watch for.

sounds very cool

Quick update. I found an article that suggests there are ten episodes. My article was based on the IMDb information which shows eight. I found several links to the "new trailer" posted just a week or two ago. All of them are broken links already. Amazon must have pulled them down. I guess we will just have to wait and see...

If they compare it to Black Mirror - a show I enjoyed (for lack of a better word) quite a lot - I might actually like this show too. Cool beans!

They did compare it to black mirror. Although I have never seen that one. Guess I need to hunt it down.

you definitely should ;)

I am excited to hear about this. I read the article because of its title (sounded cool) but wasn't connecting it to the book. I found the book very unique and love the movie Blade Runner.

In short, I am really hoping that the series lives up (at least a little bit) to its potential.

Cheers for sharing!
