‘Built with Electron’ Episode #6: Thirsty for More Thursday Action, some bad ass open source!

in electron-steem •  7 years ago

as part of my motivation to start learning how to use electron i’ve been digging around their website to see what is possible with the platform and i’ve found some great stuff — i’ve got seven of these planned and i’m hoping you will check out the quickfire soapbox made wistia videos i made, i’ve embedded episode five below. ..

EPISODE SIX

we had to hack this together for this episode, wistia soapbox messed up and would not save or let me use the editor so i captured the screen with quicktime screen record, routed the audio with sound source to capture system audio, trimmed it up, uploaded it to vimeo. faff, but i was going to re-record it and anyway i kinda miss using vimeo.

what is electron and what is ‘electron on steemit?’

it’s a cool platform that allows someone (hopefully) non coder like me to hack together something (and get some help) to build our some applications that have been floating around my brain for far too long and need to come to life. i’m also sharing my journeys with the platform alongside these quick fire shows highlighting some tools that have been built with the platform. mainly to inspire me to keep going when things look really complicated but also so you can discover some neat tools! :)

i have to build my dreams, not get people to invest in them and waste mental energy teaching the why. ..

i had a shit start to my day interfacing with peoples this morning because of discord. decided to stop going there for now. but it did teach me a BIG lesson, if i want to live out and create my dreams i have to be the one to make them, i don’t need to explain them i just need to make them, i need to learn, i need to create, the compulsion to create to put my mark on it, not for some egotistical reason or driven by the only ideal of money but because i’m a social artist, because i’m a 21st century craftsman. that’s where i live, between the storytelling lines of the visual and the soundwave. i love the artistry of the methods and the process. i need to weave my own.

the headset application in this pack really inspires me. i love that they have done their, the interface is super tight, the application of what it does it does really well and fast and i love the features they have bought to it, it’s like a mobile app but on you’re desktop and i love that, i love that idea of having a little companion app on the desktop, it’s certainly inspiring my ideas and realising that i just have to make something small first and then build that up from there. i don’t want to have to attach a value in terms of time for money when it comes to my creativity or creative process. not everything should be about money otherwise we are doomed to the same faults and issues that we already see in this elitist social structure that has seen the distribution of wealth bring us undone. time to activate.

I like what you said in there about not having to explain your dreams to others and just go them yourself. I learned that lesson after several years of trying to explain (maybe subconsciously validate) my dreams. Just gotta go do and thanks for that video about Electron. I legit knew nothing about it until your video and now I am intrigued

Thanks again looking forward to more content from ya :)

thanks buddy, means a lot. i love the fact it's cross browser and you can build SO much stuff with it. gotta get into everything again but i feel it's something i can tinker away at as a side hobby.

Sure thing buddy. Exactly what I was thinking too. I need to learn how to develop some of these ideas on my own so looks like Electron might be my new side project.

exactly. i've got probably 3 right now that i wanna build out that would help me with my productivity, one of them is both from a consuming perspective of content and the other is to help the producer end who is putting that content out, it's super early days, i've still yet to sketch everything out but i can see what a basic version would look like.

ayy heck yeah man keep it up. one level at a time. looking forward to the final product. I love productivity :)

just wanna get the mockup done first, i think the hardest bit with me the code for the api lookups, i know nothing about rest apis and auth and stuff like that, but with help i think i could create an eco system of paying developers to make me modules for what i need.

ay now that sounds like a plan right there. Let me know if I can be of any help. I wish you the best, my gut tells me you got this.

cheers man, it's gonna be part of the puzzle for when we hit the road full time or at least in the commuting sense between co-working spots. i don't want to have to worry about multiple locations so it's gonna be a tool for all of that too. i'll certainly ask when i need help. you can be sure of that!
