While putting my boy to bed last night, I peeked outside to see if an anticipated Manchester downpour had hit. Instead of streaks of light being caught in the glare of the lampposts, the rain had somehow manifested as this white chunky stuff.
Come morning, the thick blanket of snow had already deteriorated into an all encompassing sludge. How quickly something beautiful was transformed into decay.It brought to mind a mix I made many years ago.
I always thought of myself as a veteran consumer of the mix CD format, those shiny discs providing a window into a world that I was too young to experience in the early nineties. Mix CDs are a completely different beast to a live performance and while they showcase a DJs individual talents, the energy is much more thoughtful (there are exceptions, this is not a rule). Often, they build over the course of eighty minutes to a rousing crescendo and this is something I aimed to emulate in my creations.
Then this mix happened. At first, it is as light as a feather, fluidly skipping along with positivity. However, in the middle, it melts down into more reflective and introverted tones, mimicking the lifecycle of last night’s snow shower. Have a listen, it is deep and dubby.
A good month or more of effort goes into realising my big eighty minute mixes, I expect them to be of the quality that I’d pay money for in a shop. Enjoy the decline.

I loooooove mixing tunes together. Absolutely love it. I haven't done it for a year or so now. It used to take me a month to do a mix in the past (I'll stick up more of my old biggies sometime soon), so I started doing this thing where I'd just go through my promo stack and do 40 minute mixes - fortyfortyfun. I found that I would obsess less and get more noises out.
And then my boy broke my MacBook with his toddler powers and now I haven't mixed in about a year. Big dream is to get a Surface Pro 4 (or similar). Nice dinky tablet-y laptop that I can whip out on the train and mix with.
If Steem takes off for me, I'll be able to do it!
