My first watercolor plein air + step-by-step process

in elegance •  6 years ago  (edited)

I want to learn watercolor painting. If someone thinks that Chinese painting is similar to watercolor, it is not so. Learning Chinese painting, I learned the Chinese painting. Materials and methods there are others. I have no artistic knowledge of classical drawing and traditional European painting.

Last weekend I attended a master class in the open air on watercolor painting. I wanted to overcome my fear of this material. The master class was held outdoors, on the Neva river embankment, near the Academy of arts.

The master class was conducted by students of the Academy of arts. It is one of the best institutions of higher education for artists in the country

The weather was gloomy that day. The sky had many gray clouds. All around was grey and somber. Atmospheric!

We sat on folding chairs on the waterfront. Our head teacher Alex tells us the basics of drawing and painting.

Alex invited everyone to choose their own story of the future picture.

The first type - a view of the bridge and St. Isaac's Cathedral. I wanted to choose him first. And then I thought I was too familiar. I changed my mind.

The second-a view of the opposite Bank of the river and the white Church. I didn't like this view.

And the third-a view of the shipyard, with construction cranes. I chose him...

First drawing with a pencil. I was scared to start. I'm not afraid to draw Chinese drawings without any sketches, and here I was confused and did not know where to start. It turned out that my vision is not very good. I couldn't see the details on the horizon.

Then start to add color to the sky. We all painted wet on wet, but broke it into stages. First, I wet the paper with water, and then began to add color to it. Everything was grey. But where to get the gray color? On my palette was not gray and black colors. I mixed brown and blue colors.

I liked that the outdoor paint dries quickly.

Then I took the other colors and started charting buildings and ships on the horizon line. This stage, for me, was a little nervous as there were tourists and took pictures of it with their phones....I was confused.

Then I started painting the water. I had no idea how to do it. But our teacher gave some advice. To the horizon the water is lighter, darker in the foreground. I can also say that my painting has absorbed the spirit of St. Petersburg. After all, I used the water from the Neva river to dilute the colors.

I had to paint small details and shadows. These are houses, ships, and most importantly - construction cranes! I'm not used to paint such straight lines. My cranes are deprived of grace.

It's been two hours. Weather during this time changed several times. The clouds broke and showed blue sky.

My finished drawing. I like it, despite the flaws and irregularities. This is my first watercolor. I felt happy and wanted to go on.

Thanks for your support and comments!

You will only get better with time and consistent practice!

Thank you! I really want to learn watercolor! ) I understand that now this is the first uncertain attempt)

You sure will get better at it.

An uncertain attempt that turned out well!

Oh wow!!! It turned out REALLY NICE! Who says you don't know how to paint huh?? It looks really good. So have u overcome your fear of water colour now?

Thanks, @zord189. Yes, fear has overcome! I want to practice and practice :)) And I've already read the whole book about watercolor sketching)

haha, will keep an eye out more of ur water colour posts :D

Wonderful. Sometimes the irregularities and imperfections are what makes a painting standout. water colours are very difficult too, great work.

Thank you for your encouraging comment. It is important to me and gives me the energy that to practice!

@veta-less I am no artist by any means. I cannot draw. I cannot paint. To see this is an inspiration for me to maybe take some classes to learn how to draw or paint. I was amazed that this was your first time doing this.
It turned out great! I hope you continue to do this as I know you will be a master at it in no time!

@ilsaione I'm so glad you liked it! I think my intuition helps me to draw...)

Отличная работа! Мне очень нравится как вы передали волны на рисунке.

@sweettais Спасибо) первый раз пробовала)

It seemed like it was a nice experience, and judging from the picture the class went well. I love the step by steps that I often find on here. Watercolor is a great medium to use, I find it interesting that to be truly great at it you must be a great sketch artist as well. I used to follow a panter/speaker who would be considered a master. I think he actually painted a couple presidents in watercolor. His paintings are so life like it amazes me. Oh yay, a name might help. Mitchell Tolle

Thank you! I found this artist's website! He paints wonderfully!

Yes, he is one of my favorites. I used to have several motivational talks he did on cassette tape, and he is just about as good a speaker as he is a painter.

Beautiful ! Amazing how your first watercolour plein air art turned out so lovely <3 You captured the moods of the day well with your grays and blues <3 I love the step by step also, and also also, I love that you braved your nervousness throughout the text <3

Wonderful post, @veta-less <3

Thank you @veryspider ! Yeah, it's amazing that I'm the only one who used this gray-blue scale in my work. The other students work was lighter...solar...But this was not in reality.

I really love the first picture you took. For all the talk or fear, fantastic piece! You are a great artist... All the best for the future.

Thank you very much!

This is so beautiful @veta-less, and I have to say that this made me laugh:

My cranes are deprived of grace.

Years ago I took a watercolor class, but your progress far exceeds mine :)

Congratulations on the curie vote too!

@erikah Oh, I'm so glad you enjoyed my work! I like those blue greys, too)

I love your work! I'm going to practice more once the summer is over and need the guidance, like your posts :) So I would really appreciate step-by-step posts in the future as well :)

You did a wonderful job there. This was your first time? Looks just like the scenery :)

Thanks to @anomadsoul making me "A whale for a day" by following my vote while he is traveling, my vote will be followed directly by his vote with the same percentage. So thanks to this you will receive a much higher upvote than I could give with my own Steem Power.

Have a great weekend!

Yes, this is my first watercolor painting ) Thank you very much for your support @anouk.nox and @anomadsoul !

Whenever I see an art post, I would usually look at the backstory of how an artist came up with the piece. The art itself is wonderful to look at (I appreciate watercolor works because it's a traditional media I'm really bad at using :P) The backstory builds up the art and explains the thought process of the artist which I often find enlightening. Congratulations on the curie :D

@adamada Thank you for your support! I am very pleased that you liked my picture!

I like your painting, very very much! You might not like the lines on the cranes, but I do! I love your choice of colors, too, and the shading on the boats! It's all so very lovely, that I'd frame it and hang it and enjoy it! It is extra-special, too, that you used water from the river where you painted it to dilute the colors! This is beautiful! 💙

@thekittygirl Thank you very much for such a detailed comment and support! I am very glad that you liked my work ) it inspires me to move on and not afraid of working with watercolor)
