Bornholm - part IV - Østerlars Kirke stairs.

If you thought we were finished in the church, you were mistaken. You can go up using these stairs. Noticed something? Yes, they are uneven and the staircase is very small. As a matter of fact they are built in such a way, you can't go up smoothly, because sometimes steps are missing (or very small.) This is to delay attackers.

Hi Mika, that is because this church was also used as a refuge (call it church fortress or fortress church.) It dates from around 1150, although the exact age is unknown...
