You would think that some rocks in the Baltic sea wouldn't have any importance, right? Well, think of it, even here men built a fortress! As the most Northern point of Denmark and since the Swedish combat fleet gained importance, king Christian IV of Denmark decided to have a fortification on Christiansø in 1684 just to change the mind of the Swedish if they ever would think good of invading Denmark.
Christian IV stationed troops here, but since the Swedish are friendly people and the military importance of Christiansø lost its importance, the Danish changed their minds and couldn't come up with any other idea of making a state prison from the buildings.
But even then the fortification had its use, since in 1808 the island became target of the English and their fleet during the Danish-British war. Apparently in life, if you befriend someone, someone else becomes jealous...
Now everyone (especially the British) has grown up, and the archipelago is as peaceful as can be. Lots of painters comehere to enjoy the good light, and many scientists join them in flocking the crowd to count the sea birds...
- This is the 9th part in a series about Bornholm during my week long stay in 2016:
- The first 5 parts were about Østerlars Krike, last part of which you will find here,
- Part 6 and 7 were about Gudhjem.
- Part 8 is about Christiansø.
