By far the most interesting day on Bornholm was when I took North heading Sandvih, the northernmost part of the Island. The sun which already was present for the whole week did in extra effort: it was sunny and warm, you would be forgiven for mistaking Bornholm for some tropical island.
Driving north you quickly cycle through some much and dense forest. Halfway through I stopped at Jons Kapel (Chapel of John), which was a lovely place to eat my sandwiches that I had brought along...
Lacking some imagination, when I first heard about Jons Kapel I thought to find a chapel or some church there. However there is none, Jons Kapel being a large rock (or cliff if you will) that is some 40 meter (120 feet) high above sea level. According to legend, the hermit John came to Bornholm to bring christianity to the island and chose to settle in a cave in this rock, where people came and visited him.
The formation of the cliff is a little less romantic, I am afraid. It was formed by waves beating the rock when sea levels where considerably higher. You can go down the cliff to reach sea level, but the clove is narrow and as such it is a little difficult to take pictures. The second photo is a composite panorama out of 4 wide angle photo's...
- This is the 11th part in a series about Bornholm during my week long stay in 2016:
- The first 5 parts were about Østerlars Krike, last part of which you will find here,
- Part 6 and 7 were about Gudhjem.
- Part 8 to 10 is about Christiansø.
Unless otherwise noted, all photo's are made by myself!
