We all understand what having empathy means - it means to be able to understand the hurt someone might be feeling even if we have never gone through that situation ourselves. For example, if someone loses a parent, we are able to comfort them and understand how hard this time would be for them - without actually experiencing it ourselves. This is what differentiates empaths, they feel others’ emotions as if they were their own.
This means that if an empath is standing next to someone on the train that has just gone through a breakup, they might feel the physical and emotional pain associated with breaking up with a loved one. This also makes it super difficult for empaths to watch scary or tragic films on TV or in movies, including any stories on the news. They also tend to get overwhelmed in large crowds, often feeling depleted after being surrounded by so many people. Usually, empaths can be very introverted people. They also might have to take themselves out of situations and spend time with themselves for a while to reset. However, they tend to be great friends. They are able to listen and support you, although, we should be careful not to take advantage of this as this can be extremely emotionally and physically draining for an empath.
Are you an empath?
- Do people always say you are too sensitive?
- Are you easily insulted or take things the wrong way?
- Do big crowds of people overwhelm and drain you?
- Can you physically feel pain when those around you are upset or hurt?
- Are you easily frightened or jumpy?
If so, here are some tips to help:
- It is important to set boundaries with your friends and family
- Give yourself plenty of time for self care and alone time
- Make sure you are spending lots of time in nature (this allows you to reset)
- Practice meditation, learning to block out outside distractions will become useful when in big crowds
- Learn to prioritise your own feelings
- Show yourself the same compassion as you do your friends and family
