boldCurious to know everything about Raksha bandhan
The much-awaited festival Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on August 7 this year. As per the Hindu calendar, It usually falls on the full moon day or Purnima of the Shravan month
In Sanskrit, the words 'Raksha Bandhan' literally means 'the tie or knot of protection'—the Rakhi is the knot of protection that shields a brother from all evil.
bold Importance of this festival
The scared thread, tied on the right hand of the brother, is a symbolic reminder of it's spiritual significance—a divine vow of purity to live a life of noble thoughts, words and actions. Besides spiritual purity, when a sister ties the sacred thread of Rakhi on her brother's wrist to protect him, it's also a reminder that he has to protect her from all evils—be it spiritual or physical.
Indian history is replete with examples where brothers risked their life for their sisters. The story of Lord Krishna and Draupadi is one of the popular stories in Indian mythology. According to one version of this story, Krishna hurt his finger while handling sugarcane one day. His queen Rukmini sent her help to get a bandage while Sathyabama, his second wife, rushed to bring some cloth. Draupadi, who was a silent witness to all these, tore off a part of her sari and bandaged his finger. In return, Krishna promised to protect her always.
Many like Vikram are planning to make Raksha Bandan a special day for their sisters, who leave no stones unturned to follow the rituals for their well-being and prosperity. While shopping for the perfect rakhi starts quite ahead of the festival but the much-awaited day begins quite early for them.
Some even chant this prayer while performing the rituals and arti:
"Suraj shakhan chhodian, Mooli chhodia beej
Behen ne rakhi bandhi / Bhai tu chir jug jee"
(The sun radiates its sunlight, the radish spreads its seeds,
I tie the rakhi to you O' brother and wish that may you live long.)
After praying for his long life, the sister ties the Rakhi and chants the following prayer:
"Yena baddho Balee raajaa daanavendro mahaabalah
tena twaam anubadhnaami rakshe maa chala maa chala"
(I tie the rakhi that was tied to king Bali, the king of Demons, O Rakhi, I pray that you never falter in protecting your devotee)
The day ends in a joyous note and the entire family celebrates this sacred festival. The importance and significance of this festival is not just limited to brothers and sisters and the entire family ends the day on a joyous note.
