No power ramble

in energy •  6 years ago

When was the last time you had an unplanned power outage at home?

I can't remember the last time I was without power for more than an hour or two, but so far today it's been 12/13 hours. No light and no sockets - my broccoli is going to be thawed out 😕.

Annoyingly, (yes I'm electricity jealous) I can see a TV through the window of an apartment across the way. The main fuse box is half-fried and so, in typical Spanish style, some of the apartments have power, and some don't.

I had planned to do a utopian-io post today, present a little data and make a few SP, but I need the laptop for that, and wifi would help - using phone data destroys this old phones battery, which currently stands at 19%. I also missed the weekly meeting at Utopian, but did let the boss know why I might not be there.

It shouldn't piss me off that much, and I should be welcoming the break from the screen. I am a little, but without light also, there's little entertainment choice for this Friday evening on the island.

When I first started out on Steem, I was 100% mobile. Then I started writing a bit at work (don't hate!), and then I finally caved in and bought a laptop. I'd sort of hoped that I'd never own a computer again - strange words I guess from an IT 'professional'.

The previous desktop was left in the UK, given away for free. The sound system and one of the monitors I gave to a guy who found my phone (this phone!) in a bar, and contacted me (using the medical ID feature and Facebook) to let me know it was in his possession - the gifts were for driving 10 miles to return it.

For 18 months now though, 90%+ of my activity on Steem is via the laptop. It's just so much quicker to type, switch windows, sort images, etc. So yeah, anything from the phone takes time, and today's engagement has been brief.

There are some decent posts around though as always, and @c-cubed is a good place to look for highlights. The daily featured posts article always a couple of gems, and the topics are generally quite broad. Currently, I'm seeing a lot more 'life' type posts from the accounts I follow. It's seems some people are making adjustments, and part of this is down to the current price situation - You can probably add me to that list too.

I've also seen a few posts talking about the increase in dolphin-sized accounts. This is really good sounding news and having checked a few wallets over the past few days, a number of people I interact with fairly regularly have crossed 5k or are close. This could mean bigger upvotes for me when the prices turn around! 😛

It think they will, I just have no idea as to when. Anyway, i need some power first! Pretty happy it's a gas hob here, eggs on gas-toasted bread it is.

Enjoy your well-lit Friday evening, hopefully things will be back to normal tomorrow.

Cheers!

Asher

Those solar chargers are really clutch, might be a good investment in the future.. Although if it's night time you're out of luck anyway...

Nice talking with you in Krakow @abh12345, see you again soon!

Solar would be awesome here in the summer! Some of the water is heated in tanks on the roof, and it is mega hot in the July/August.

It's November and midnight though, damn 😛

Same Jeff, see you at the next one with any luck!

The main fuse box is half-fried and so, in typical Spanish style, some of the apartments have power, and some don't.

argh, that sucks! How's the situation with technicians on the island, do you have chances to get this fixed over the weekend? And isn't the "typical Spanish style" to pull long cables between building from available power source in such cases ;)

😂

You've got it - if it works don't knock it, but don't touch anything either!

Hopefully they'll get it sorted tomorrow, I'll be heading to the pub/mums for power if not 😊

Oooh 😲 that’s bad . Fuse box. Inspections , ordering parts, more inspections. Man at least a week.
Hopefully a tree will not grow and block view to that tv.

Hope power is soon. We depend so much on it and need it.

I was hoping it would be sorted tomorrow!

Forget the inspections, this is Spain, but I guess parts, and with it being the weekend now, it could be a few days at least. Booo!

Hope not.
Generator time if that long.

One thing for sure , shit happens

Bummer. The shit does happen, that is for sure.

This could mean bigger upvotes for me when the prices turn around!

Name names and I will drop them DMs... :D

Enjoy the time off.

Lots of the Engagement League folk seem to be buying 😁

Time off unlikely, but you may have to skim a couple of low fare phone efforts.

Any job news? LinkedIn is a pain on the phone.

Any job news? LinkedIn is a pain on the phone.

Is that still a thing? It will take some time to get it all organized but I am hopeful I will get a formal offer.

Got my job at the UN via LinkedIn - certainly still a thing, unless it's faded this year...

Good luck, you deserve some 👍🏽😊

Cheers :)

Oh, I sooooo know the feeling. I realized how dependent I'd become on our source of electricity when there was a crazy storm here in our part of Ireland one day. And I mean: CRAYZAYYYY! It came out of nowhere, like a tornado, destroyed the roof of the petrol station nearby (we were underneath it with our car just before that happened), people were blown off their socks, we saw car plates and bin covers fly past... And then, as quickly as it came, it went completely wind-still. Really the weirdest thing... When we got home, 15 miles up the road, they hadn't seen or felt a thing...
But they had had a power outage for about 3 seconds. Not long after, the electricity went. I went to bed at 10 p.m. (NEVER happens...), didn't even have candles in the house...so no lights. The next day at 11 am it came back on... Never been so relieved LOL.

That sounds pretty intense!

It's been one of the calmest days in while, so I don't think the weather is to blame - the crazy stirs last month took the power out constantly, but it was back within minutes.

Candles.... probably should get a bag of those tomorrow.

Might as well go to bed, 00:45 pretty early for me!

Haha, yeah, it was the best (and only) thing to do for me. Was well rested the next day!

Here in Belgium, we are still relying on nuclear powerplants to provide us with most of our electricity. Since all but one have been shut down because they weren't safe anymore, our governent forsees a huge shortage on electricity when winter will hit. To save as much electricity as possible, they came up with a plan to cut off the electricity in parts of the country during daytime. They divided the country in zones, with a big city in the middle. The first zone to be cutt off is the one that is the furtest from the city, the second one is a little closer... all to make sure the big cities probably won't have to deal with the powerdown.
And guess where I live... We'll be among the first to have to manage withut electricity.
Most people go to work (in the cities) during daytime, but not me. I spend my days at home.
Fortunately we have a fireplace , so we can burn wood to stay warm inside, but most people's heating systems are powered by electricity, so they won't be able to turn on the heating in the middle of winter.

When they first announced it, I started thinking about what would or wouldn't be possible in case this worst case scenario would really happen. And to be honest, I was shocked when I realized how much we depend on electricity these days. Being cut off means no computer, phone, TV or sound system. We'll even have to get ourself some battery powered lamps. No electricity also means we can't cook food. Fortunately we have a small cook8ng stove that works on gas for when we take roadtrips with the van. No fridge, and even worse: no freezer. Right now it is completely filled with leftovers from the gardening season, but without electricity, we won't be able to keep it frozen - and it's more than we can consume. We will have to start handing it out to others or at least half will end up in the trascan. That would be such a waste.
On top.of that, if they cut off the entire village, there won't be any working ATM's close by.
They are working on a solution using 25-year old systems to generate energy. Even if they get those old fasioned systems to work, I doubt they will be able to gendrzte enough to spare us all the trouble.
I must admit it was a real eye opener...
Somerimes I'm convinced they are overreacting and that all those measures won't be necessary... but then I drive to town, where literally every street has a ridiculous amount of (electric powered) Christmas lights that are on 24/7 and I wonder if people are really thzt ignorant....

I am on the move so much so mobile is my main approach for Steeming but I do most of my posts on the laptop for now. Just downloaded @partiko app today and giving it a spin and liking what I am seeing so far. So much that I gave them a delegation for their initiative to grow their SP and support the community that they posted earlier today!

Wow I can feel your anxiety all the way over here! 😄 Especially seeing your featured image while scrolling though my phone gave me anxiety 😄 but then I realized it’s not my phone but just an image... phew!

Soon we will have free energy and things like this simply can’t happen anymore 😉

Power outages are quite commonplace here! 12 hours is probably an average. I'll have to remember the gas toasted bread with eggs next time we have one!

Ahhhh the good old island power crashes, gotta love them!

I bought one of those power fluctuation batteries on our island last year. Because often electricity before and after these events remains unstable and with peaks frying your electrics, and this thing would prevent that from happening. But apart from that it would function as a battery as well when the power failed for about 5/6 hours if I only have my wifi/phonecharger and laptop connected to it. must have!

Good luck in the bar

Interestingly we had a power cut a few weeks ago. I can't remember the last time that happened but it was long enough for us to get the candles out. it reminded me of doing my homework during the miner's strikes. You probably weren't even at school then. 😂

We were actually in the middle of a meeting wit a finacial adviser who, in all his 30 years in the job, had never conducted a meeting by candlelight.

Mind you, the pretty candlelight didn't last long as John groped his way to the garage and came back with an industrial light they use for working on railways at night! 😱

Trust an engineer to spoil the romance. Mind you. Maybe he just felt 3 was one too many. 😁

@abh12345, Battery Low situation is really painful particularly when we need it the most for our work. But in my opinion everything happens for particular experience.

Wishing you an great day and stay blessed. 🙂

As a resident of Bangladesh where power cuts (load shedding) is as prevalent as low steem price and as an owner of a laptop with a almost dead battery, I can understand how you feel.

Having a laptop makes it 5x easier and efficient to do my daily tasks too. I hope the power is back now.
