The takeaway
For industrial applications, augmented reality will be bigger than virtual reality. Onshape moves to the front of the line with this revolutionary advancement in collaborative design.
The details
Cloud-based 3D CAD software Onshape announces support for the Magic Leap augmented reality platform. Onshape will release a new app designed specifically for the Magic Leap One Creator Edition and the Lightwear headset.
Onshape says using the app and headset will allow users to see contextually aware digital objects in the real world. “We’re excited to bring the many benefits of modern CAD to engineers in the Magicverse,” says Onshape CEO Jon Hirschtick. “For more than a half-century, CAD users were confined to working on a flat screen. The Magic Leap One will push product design into a whole new stratosphere.”

“Imagine your engineering team is reviewing the latest design for a race car,” adds Hirschtick. “With the ML One, they will be able to put that car right on the conference table, go under the hood and examine the engine block. They can then levitate the car above their heads and check out the exhaust system.”
The new Onshape app will support live 3D editing of CAD models, with design changes updated in real time through the Magic Leap device.
Consilia Vektor comments
“Real-time” as a computing paradigm is one of the elements in the ROAD stack we see developing as the next generation of technology innovation. (ROAD = Real-time, Operational, Autonomous, Decentralized). Using real-time for design collaboration improves processes and promotes increased creativity. It also means a lower cost of production, because changes are made in photons instead of atoms.
