KOMPAS.com - The 9th day of the 2018 Asian Games, Monday (08/27/2018), became a gold medal party for the Indonesian contingent. Ten Indonesian gold medals were obtained on that day.
Pencak silat became the main source of gold gain by wiping out eight contested medals. Two other gold medals for Indonesia are obtained from the sport climbing branch, aka rock climbing.
An additional 10 medals made the Indonesian contingent in total collect 22 gold medals in the 2018 Asian Games until Monday night. That number is the most during Indonesia's participation in the Asian Games.
With a collection of 22 gold medals, Indonesia has great potential to meet the target of finishing in the top 10 of the medal acquisition standings at the end of the 2018 Asian Games. In fact, it is not impossible to finish in the top five.
Counted since Hiroshima 1994, when the Asian Games had been followed by the Soviet Union, only once ranked 10th in the medal collection did they collect 10 gold. This happened at Incheon 2014 when Qatar collected 10 gold.
Meanwhile, the most number of gold medals obtained by the fifth place in the Asian Games took place in Bangkok 1998. At that time, Kazakhstan collected 24 gold medals - just like the hosts Thailand in fourth place.
At Incheon 2014, Iran, Indonesia's closest competitor, is currently in fifth place in the final medal standings with 21 gold, 7 gold in contradiction with Kazakhstan on top.
Looking at these statistics, the Indonesian public may be optimistic to see their athletes finish in the top five of the final standings. Moreover, the 2018 Asian Games still last a few days and there are still potential sports branches that are projected to win gold medals.
