A very large and GROWING percentage of the TISD population has parents that can't read, write, or speak English. So what's a good little taxpayer to do?
An open letter to TISD:
With all due respect, please know I wish none of my tax money was going to any bi-lingual program. Any amount spent making special considerations for non-English speaking students or parents is an absolute waste. I have the same feeling about these expenses that have infected our entire county and state government.
A certain amount of diversity is good. But when 'diversity' equates to a dysfunction and inefficiencies in our schools because two large groups literally don't speak the same language, it ceases to be a benefit. If I were superintendent or chairman, I would use a little tough love and try to stop all Spanish language programs other than offering it as an elective. However, I would in turn, make ESL classes available to the adults that wanted them. With our current system nobody wants them. They don't need it! They've got people like you Mr Sanchez, bending over backwards for them and people like me paying for it. TISD is responding to the Hispanic community's needs? How about the Hispanic community responding to TISD's needs for a change?
Lack of foresight on the part of an immigrant to my country should never put a burden on me. Moving to 'El Norte' is not compulsory. English is the accepted standard language in this country and everyone knows it before they move. Why should it be our job to accommodate the unprepared immigrants? Your elaborate expensive bi-lingual programs for both students and parents are discouraging assimilation and encouraging illegal immigration. You're simply promoting division. TISD's efforts to include non-English speaking citizens, in the way it's going about it, does nothing but impede having a unified community. That's my opinion. Thank you for your consideration.
