Traditional recipe! How to make a Caipirinha

There are few ingredients for caipirinha but making it well is an art form because the proportions vary. I'm going to present you a recipe with the proportions used by Brazilians who have been preparing this combination for years.

The history of caipirinha
It often happens in recipes of great renown that there are several theories about its origin. Caipirinha is an example. The most accepted hypothesis is that it was created in Sao Paulo in Brazil in 1918. The history of the current drink would be in an earlier version made with lemon, garlic and honey, which was given to flu patients ('the so-called Spanish flu').

In many homemade punch type remedies alcohol was added to accelerate the therapeutic effect, the cachaça in Brazil was used a lot for this purpose. It is not known when, but at some point, honey and garlic were no longer added to the drink and only lemon and liqueur remained, just as it is now made with caipirinha. Adding ice was because of the heat, I felt more like having a cool drink than a hot one.

How to make a caipirinha

Scholars of the caipirinha theme affirm that this drink was created by large landowners in the Pericicaba region of Sao Paulo in the 19th century. It was prepared as it happens in other parts of the world when important festivals or events were held in the region.

This drink was first seen as an affordable substitute for imported whisky or wine that was expensive and hard to come by. It was not available to everyone in the 19th century, but little by little its consumption spread and it reached the popular classes. As its low-cost ingredients became the'official' cocktail of Sao Paulo during the 19th century, even today this combination is still a tourist attraction for Brazil.

INGREDIENTS FOR ONE PERSON

1 lemon or lime, squeezed
2 teaspoons sugar
50 ml of cachaça (Brazilian rum)
Ice
Preparation
Wash the lemon or lime and cut it into segments.
Place the pieces in a wide-mouthed glass, add the sugar.
With a mortar or macerate instrument, crush the lemon so that it releases its juice and mixes with the sugar.
Pour the cachaça. The lemon pieces must be left at the bottom of the glass to provide aroma.
Add the ice. How to make a caipirinha.
If desired, decorate a slice of lemon or fresh mint leaves.
