Bouvet Island is a small uninhabited island in the southern Atlantic Ocean, some 1600 kilometers north of the Antarctica and 2500 kilometers southwest of South Africa. It is a territory dependent on Norway. The island has an area of 49 square kilometers and is covered for 90% by ice with an inactive volcano in the middle.
The island is named after Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier, who saw it for the first time in January 1739. After him no one else was able to find it because of incorrect coordinates. In the nineteenth century it was rediscovered during British expeditions and was renamed to Lindsay Island and Liverpool Island.
In 1927, during an Antarctic expedition, Norway claimed the island and on 3 January 1928 it proclaimed Norwegian territory. The only way to access the island is by helicopter. Because of its difficult accessibility, only a hundred people have managed to visit the island.
