Afro-Latinas : The miseducation and misunderstanding of Urban America

Charlamagne’s comments on the Breakfast Club the other day didn’t surprise me. Being “WOKE” is trendy, yet ignorance remains king.

Not so long ago: African men, women, children were sold and sent to Central and South America by the hand of Spain, just like my ancestors were shipped off to Haiti by France. Same origins, different destination, and language as time progressed.

Forward to today. Cuba, Panama, and Colombia: countries I’ve visited, are FILLED with #AmaraLaNegra ‘s and #Juju ‘s (google JuJu Cam). One city that stood out to me the most was Cartagena, a city on the Caribbean coast of Colombia.
The strong African undertones permeate its streets through its food and its music. Unapologetically black, oozing with natural beauty and feminine energy. The women of Cartagena, also known as “Costenas” would make your head spin.

Colonizers did a great job by separating us: not only geographically and linguistically, but also mentally.
However...no matter the distance; when in proximity of the Afro Latina; I’ll always feel right at home.
