My First Movie Review - It's A Double

Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War

As soon as I got back from the Dominican, the family and I went to see Deadpool 2, and the next day we saw Infinity War. This will be my first movie review, and it's a double.

I thought Deadpool 2 was even better than the first one. There was less depraved sexuality, there was more heart, the story was much better and intricate, the effects were a tad better (they were already decent in the first one), and the villain was more complex. Incidentally, Josh Brolin plays the villain in both films, and does a wonderful job in each.

In an earlier blog I listed names of many Generation X actors and comedians who run the entertainment industry right now. The reason I bring this up is because, despite being five years younger than me, Reynolds is also a Gen Xer and it shows because this flick is riddled with eighties pop culture references aplenty. Anorexia's kids came also, and neither one got the "Talk to me Goose" reference to Top Gun. In fact, many of these lines went over their heads. [Also see Cobra Kai]

In any case, I found myself laughing out loud several times, and hysterically when the briefly assembled 'X Force' parachuted to their first mission. I could have done without the forced appeal to the LGBT community with the two lesbian super heroes. Also, this movie has the best after credits scene of ANY MOVIE EVER.

I also liked the Infinity War very much. I highly recommend you watch as many of the Marvel movies beforehand as possible before seeing this. Anorexia had no idea why Captain America had a beard and was wearing black. I told her that in Civil War they were exiled. She had no recollection.

Everything about this movie was terrific: the effects, the acting, the balancing act of so many characters, and the bold ending. I also like the moments where Thor is screaming as he holds the thingy together and when Cap is screaming as he tries to hold Thanos back. It reminds me of Harrison Ford's great scream in The Temple of Doom when he is using his feet to stop the cart with Short Round and Willie from crashing.

The best scene is when Ironman, Spiderman, Dr. Strange, and the Guardians almost get the glove off of Thanos's hand. That is really impressive when you think about it - the Hulk, Cap, Black Panther, and the other Avengers were not even needed. It all goes south when Peter Jason Quill (aka. Star-Lord) loses his cool, but it was his plan to begin with so . . .

Some characters were more likable in this movie than even in their stand alone films. For instance, I really liked Dr. Strange in this film while only moderately in his solo flick. Also, this was the best Thor has ever been. Chris Hemsworth really nailed the character this time, and the character was written to be a real bad ass too. The movie starts strong with the Hulk, but you never see him again. The trailer showing him running with Cap and Black Panther is a lie. It does not happen!

P.S. I checked out Justice League from the public library today, and fell asleep watching it.
