Spoilers ahead for those who have not seen this movie.
I hardly do movie reviews because of the complex nature of interpreting such movies without giving away too many spoilers and staying right on point.
However due to the controversial nature of this movie, after seeing it only like a billion times, I decided to do a review.

Acrimony is a beautiful movie no doubt, this movie has turned so many groups in to a battlefield with those siding either Mel, Robert, the family or even outright critiquing the movie.
This movie which has raked in millions of dollars at the box office really gives the audience a run for their money.

Without further ado, let us delve deep into the review; the plot of this movie is about a young lady (Mel) played by the notable Taraji P. Henson who gets fortunate to come into possession of some amount of money after the death of her mother. She meets a young and handsome man (Robert) and from there the plot unfolds.

The story ultimately ends in the death of Mel, after the ex husband marries a lady (Diana) he once had an affair with when he was dating Mel.
So many people believe the man was at fault for not "fighting" for her love, well could this be true?

  • The story picks up with Mel narrating all that happened in a deranged state. So I ask the readers, can we expect the absolute truth from someone narrating a story in a deranged state? We were not watching the movie through the writer's eye, but through the eyes of Mel. Robert never had a voice.

  • Rob and Mel had a history even before the money was involved, he was trying to help her with her failing grades. The sisters were not nice to Robert and it was evident he wanted to prove a point to them.

  • Throughout the marriage, the guy never cheated, never got drunk nor smoked, never hit her, only thing he was focused on was finishing his dream battery which he believed was going to be successful.

  • When he transgressed when they were dating and she lost her womb while trying to kill him and the lady by ramming into his trailer home, he begged, atoned for his sin, married her and never cheated again.

  • She divorced him because she "thought" he cheated on her again after how many years despite his plea that he didn't or maybe she let people mess with her head and ended up with another man WHO WAS ALSO HER EX and was a divorcee. How ironic that people missed those details in the movie.

  • When he came to sign the divorce paper after being kicked out of the house and living in a homeless shelter while working as a dishwasher for months at a restaurant, he begged her to reconsider because he loved her but she didn't and he left EVERYTHING he owned for her.

  • He didn't rush into a relationship immediately, he suffered for a while, all the time Mel was having fancy dinner dates with her ex the divorcee whom she was sleeping with. Diana came through for Robert with his deal, and his battery hit. She opened the doors to her house for him when he had no where else and along the line feelings got involved. Why blame her?

  • First thing he did was to come back to Mel and refund x10 the amount spent, he got back the house and renovated it. The first thing she did before he spoke was to accuse him of wearing a borrowed suit and that "he was trying to impress her" How come no one saw that?

The two questions I have from this are; if he didn't succeed and she had left him, won't people praise her? She wouldn't have come back if he didn't make it.

Second question; are we aware that even the shrink she was seeing also blamed her? The writer left a big clue in that part but sentiment wont let some people see it.

  • Mel disobeyed a court order simply because he bought Diana the things he had always promised her, things she said she never wanted that he should just "get a job". Who remembers that?

  • She attempted to kill Robert and she died and he even tried to save her. Does that not show love?

The movie was told through the eyes of a deranged ex wife with the voice of the man on mute.
The only times the writer even had a voice was at pivotal points in the movie (the shrink and the judge) and they all came to a similar conclusion that she was at fault.

This movie is an evaluation of each person's psyche. In my opinion, Robert was not at fault. He simply didn't have a voice to begin with.

I have not seen the movie 😁😁😁😁 .i don't need to stress my self over a movie.

I hear you...my friend go and watch it...lol

Good review @ehiboss, I think its gonna be an interesting one, but i'm only into series.

You really need to see this one👌

Indeed the person needs to see it.

I haven't seen the movie and I'm sure I won't see it anytime soon but from your review it is clear that there are factors to be considered, but one thing I'd like to add is this, humans tend to be biased when we are asked to judge, there's usually sentiment to the plight of one of the party's involved.
My final note is this, it is said that we are not responsible for peoples actions but we are most definitely responsible for how we react to those actions. A mind clouded with emotions would more often than not make a wrong decision.

You need to see the movie, your opinion is highly needed.

I'll try and see it soon

I really need to watch this movie to know who is right or wrong, for now I can't say because everyone keeps taking sides, I guess I need to find out what do movie is about to know whose side I will take.

Yea and please watch with an open mind.

Sure I will do that this weekend

Quite an interesting movie, comes at a time where the focus is on mens behavior towards women where this is kind of the opposite.

I wonder how it was broadly recieved

You need to see this movie.

My points exactly! Mel had issues that the viewers failed to see and all they focused on was the fact that Robet cheated or didn’t love her enough... some even said he used her... sure it looked like he was using her at the beginning but then he could have still decided not to marry her after she lost her womb but he still stayed

Maddest part was he gave her 10m faints that’s generosity mhen, no more no less...

Thank you. People fail to see the stort was told through the eyes of an obsessed and deranged person. A lot of clues were left behind for the audience to see. Sadly, people took it too literal.

Beautifully written as usual boss! I loved your detailed analysis and the way you found facts to buttress your points. I have found out through many arguments though, that guys tend to share your opinion..supporting Robert, while women tend to support Mel. This is a natural reaction because it simply means we all put ourselves in the shoes of the characters that we understand better.

To me, Acrimony was kinda paradoxical. It started on a build up that got us disliking the guy. As for ladies, we put ourselves in the lady's shoes...how used would i feel if i had to foot the bills for my man for endless years working 3 jobs and not having a life? Especially when the man himself is lazy and wouldn't try to do anything else or get any temp job? Yes he believed in his dreams and his invention was brilliant but the man was supposed to make an effort to protect and provide for his wife! He let her work all those jobs night and day and kept spending everything she earned, blowing up the electricity by working at home and accumulating a lot of bills!

Yes she had an anger problem which was terrible and detrimental to her health but think about it, they already had a history that built distrust! The guy was actually collecting all of her money fresh after her Mum's death yet was cheating on his golden hen that had been laying golden eggs with another woman!! Haba! She had siblings and family members that didn't understand the guy's attitude as well and so they egged her on to break up. She breaks up with him and then he hits it big making millions with the help of the same lady he cheated with in the past???! Come on! Of all women, it had to be the one he had been caught with in the past?! Really?

To say na me too, I go vex big time. But instead of going bonkers, I would simply take the 10 million he gave me and invest 7.5 million then spend the remaining 2.5 million on myself and my sisters making us all happy and starting a new life with a new outlook....imagine the kind of amazing guys she could have met and started a new love story with! I hated the end of the movie, they made her become a raving lunatic and that was not fair. She had endured hell for the guy! She was angry and jealous but he caused it with his previous cheating and intensely lazy/laidback nature. His actions spoke louder than his words saying he cared nothing for anything apart from his invention. The final straw was abandoning the truck because of the call for an interveiw...after his wife's family had done everything to help and had told him it would cost them terribly if he didn't deliver! He didn't even have the decency to call them to tell them to come take over the truck and make the delivery! Lawd! What incredible selfishness!! I usually love Tyler Perry's works but this one left me feeling cold inside! Twas brilliant though
