SMALL SCALE RETAIL TRADE:

Is a retail trade with small scope of operations.
In this type of trade, little capital can be used to set up or start up the business.

TYPES OF SMALL SCALE RETAIL TRADE:

(1) HAWKING: This is the form of itinerant or traveling trade, in which the merchant move their goods from one place to another, may be with their vehicles, bicycles, etc.

CHARACTERISTICS OF HAWKING:

(a) They usually operate in small size.

(b) They do advertise their goods with mouth, horn,.bells, trumpets, local speakers to attack customers as they move and also minimizing cost of advertisement.

(c) They render door - to - door service.

(d) This is one man business.

(e) It requires small capital to set up.

(f) They store variety of goods.

(g) They don't pay for rent (stall/shop).

(h) They deal on consumable goods, etc.

ADVANTAGES OF HAWKING:

(a) Low cost of running the business.

(b) Provision of employment opportunities.

(c) Low prices of product.

(d) It requires small amount of capital.

(e) Increase in sales and profit.

(f) Flexibility in operation.

(g) Provision of door - to door services, etc.

DISADVANTAGES OF HAWKING:

(a) Exposure to road accident.

(b) Deprivation of educational right.

(c) Consumers may be cheated.

(d) limitation in terms of quality.

(e) Exclusion of heavy goods.

(f) It disturbs free flow of traffic.

(g) Environmental pollution.

(h) Bad influence, etc.
