Do you think something like this could work to make people more or less aware of the environmental impacts of plastics?

Is bags not the bad guys? I always use paper bags, or my now 10 year old reusable nylon bags, for 99% of the time. Yes, the reusable bags needs to be used for several years to even begin to compensate for the higher usage of production. But it will less likely end up in nature as all the one usage bags.
Paper makes no micro plastics in the ocean, but there's plenty of other plastic products we use every day that does this....
