Why Australia day is not good for the country

We went to some Australia day celebrations on 26th January!

It was great to be part of the happy gatherings of thousands of Adelaide residents who are so happy to be in this lovely country.

But the amount of rubbish detracted a little from the festive celebrations.

Being a bit of a health freak (in many peoples view) I walk a lot and tend to pick up plastic and glass bottles and cans as a passtime on my walks.

Around celebrations and holidays it becomes very obvious to me how the amount of discarded rubbish increases by 2 or 3 times after these celebrations, because I don't have enough pockets and hands to carry it all home, if I can't find a plastic bag when I forget to bring one with me.

We have such a wonderful planet to be proud of and look after, it is so sad that there are so many people who don't appreciate it and are happy to leave their rubbish behind.

Not only is it unsightly, but much of it is polluting the environment (plastics that don't biodegrade). It is a danger to us (children especially, getting cuts from bottles and cans) and animals. The good thing is it is recycleable and disposed of properly it can be reused (providing our councils have the appropriate facilities).

Hopefully one day we can celebrate our life, religion, country, birthday, new year or whatever we want without leaving a derogatory blot on our landscape, the beautiful place we call home.
