Burger from a Petri Dish

in environmentalism •  8 years ago

Our current method of meat production is unsustainable and causes irreparable damage to our environment and health. Methane from one cow's farts is comparable to the pollution from one car. Although alternative/greener methods of husbandry exists (feeding cows seaweed), they alone aren't enough.

Cultured meat offers a promising solution. The startup, Supermeat, will grow meat from animal cells in a lab. It's more ethical, environmentally-friendly and healthier/safer. It tastes like regular meat. We need a better way to feed the world's booming populations. Large corporations like Tyson are already on board; they couldn't ignore the cost-effectiveness of lab-grown meat. It invested in Beyond Meat, which creates a veggie-based burger that sizzles and bleeds like real beef.

Our current method of meat production is unsustainable and causes irreparable damage to our environment and health

Not true.

That said vat grown meat will be a terrific idea.
I'd almost bet that when it's brought into production there will be those who whine about it saying that it's unsustainable and causes irreparable damage to our environment and health

they always do.

Thanks for reading and responding. It looks like we're getting our info from different sources: http://www.zmescience.com/science/news-science/meat-protein-chain-042332/

We are.
No offense but I've noticed over the last forty or so years that when words such as "sustainable" are bandied about then the science is out the window. The discussion is about philosophy not science. The reason we have big , dense brains (lotsa neurons) is because about a million years ago (give or take) our ancestors began to eat MEAT. Meat has more bang for the buck than anything else.

I'd say a million years is fairly sustainable.

Our current method of meat production is unsustainable and causes irreparable damage to our environment and health.

Not true.

Sustainable farming / ranching practices have been shown to completely rejuvenate areas. With proper watering of the grazing areas and the moving of cattle before they decimate the habitat, continually increases the soil conditions.

Animals eat grass, we eat the animals. (we cannot eat the grass)
It is true that much of american cattle are raised on imported grains, many animals, especially around the world, are raised on pasture grasses.
If we didn't raise these animals, many people around the world would starve. (especially New Zealand)

These stories only concern themselves with calories. The "scientific consensus" is that calories are all that is of concern with diet.
Many have found this not to be true. That two items, both with the same calorie content, have vastly differing energy levels provided to the body.
I do not believe vat raised muscle will provide much energy to the body.

Thanks for reading and providing your input. I've cited an article above in response to @everittdmickey as he made a similar comment.
