In response to the Documentary “A Plastic Ocean”...
I am drawn to nature. The amazing colors, smells, and noises entice me. I love the warm sands on my toes and brisk mist of a crashing wave. The beginning of “A Plastic Ocean” entertained those very senses. It took me under water and allowed me to swim with majestic whales. My blissful daze was suddenly diminished when a stream of plastic waste and oil glided across the ocean surface, right above a young blue whale.
“A Plastic Ocean” shows us the dark consequences of human consumption and mindless waste. It brings to question our impact on 1.) the environment, 2.) animals and 3.) human health. To be honest, this film was very disturbing to watch. At times I’d look away from the graphic images of animals dying due to plastic pollution. Turtles would eat plastic bags because of its close resemblance to jellyfish, whales inhaled gallons of water in hopes of catching krill but instead would consume micro-plastic. There is not a single sea animal that hasn’t been affected. It disgusted me to my core to see how one single product can do so much harm.
If you want to know more about our plastic problem, I encourage you to watch this documentary. It was very informative and I definitely learned a lot. It has made me evaluate my own personal choices and habits. Most people say that one person can’t make a difference, I disagree. If everyone were to have this mindset, then we are never going to get anywhere. I want to be a part of the solution. But change starts with yourself.
