This post is a counter arguments on Vitalik's The Merkle article titled "Top 3 EOS Project Issues According to Vitalik Buterin"
3. EOS Fee Structure: BANDWIDTH SHARE VIA DELEGATION
This means users will need to buy a certain amount of tokens in order to spend them. This is an unnecessary exposure to volatility, according to Buterin.
Not everyone wants to spend hard-earned money on an unknown asset in order to use a blockchain. Even the people who want to use EOS just a handful of times will be needing to buy a lot of coins and sell them all later on, assuming the price has not collapsed.
Looking at Steem, we already have a great amount of users who were on board thanks to Steem Power delegation. This means a favorable big stakeholders who have lots of unused bandwidth can borrow some amount of the network usage right to new users. In this ways, new users can minimize volatility risks.
If a user decided to use EOS platform continuously, I think it is better than burying fees, which means 100% loss, to endure price fluctuation. For instance, given the current registration fee of $7.5, 75-time transactions on Steem makes the break-even to Ethereum's simple transfer (but smart contract transactions costs greater and therefore the break-even number would be much lower than 75).
2. 100,000 Transactions Per Second?: 3.7 VS. 9.3 TRANSACTIONS PER SECOND
While he is criticizing that 100k TPS is unrealistic dream, he'd better to look at current realistic numbers. Ethereum's all-time-high TPS is 3.7 (3176,788 txs per day), but Steem is over 9.3 TPS (over 800,000 txs per day). Look at the follow charts (be careful to read that y-axis numbers).
Regarding Merkle proofs, Dan answered in this post
1. DPOS is a Potential Issue: NOT PERFECT BUT IMPROVING
Brendan Blumer, the CEO of Block.one replied this specific issue on Medium post. As a witness of BitShares and Steem, I partially agree that DPOS does not always incentivise correct votes. However, I feel that voters are wise and thoughtful (while sometimes do not) so that they make correct vote collaboratively, and in the long-run.
But, as Brendan said, an open healthy debate will bring good ideas to improve both sides.
I've been out of the loop for a minute...what instigated this criticism from Buterin?

I think he was specifically asked about it.

I see. Thanks for letting me know. Was this over twitter? Or was it a forum? I'd like to readup a bit about it.

I believe these questions were asked live at a developer meetup of some kind. I'm sure someone has the video available, but I haven't seen it myself.

Fees - I think it is hard to be too religious about the fee structure. There are many monetising models in the world, this is just one more. The market will figure that out, and it sees to work for Bitshares/Steem.
TPS - yeah any numbers are made up or guesses at this stage. That said, Butshares/steem have tested to 3300 TPS from memory. And the base technology has proven into the millions in a different context, when heavily optimised. We'll see.
DPOS - so - any system of governance is a "proxy" for the best solution, and for the perceived view of the community. Governance doesn't deliver mathematical results, which can confuse some. It isn't about the best, it's about coming up with a system that approximates a community's wishes and interests, and doesn't exhibit wild behaviour like forks and thefts. DPOS seems to do that, other systems might exist, but right now it's a lonely field.

Agreed. All systems have advantages or disadvantages depending on contexts and precise tweaks. I personally think V's criticisms are too religious, while we are looking for "street level" designs interacting with users.

"incentivise correct votes" .. isnt that just lobbiers bias ?
A vote is a vote - there is no single correct vote, to X or to Y both are correct
