The EOS ICO for Dummies!

The EOS ICO is coming! Are you ready?

In the crypto world, things move and change so quickly that it's easy to get lost. New projects are coming so quickly now that most of us hardly have the time or expertise to learn everything we need to know about a project. Meanwhile, Initial Coin Offerings (also known as ICOs) keep coming faster, and if you're like me, it's easy to get caught up by the FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). In fact, I heard about Peerplays months ago, and just got too busy with work trying to finish my dissertation, graduate, and get a job, that I totally missed out on the ICO, and now I'm kicking myself. Anyway, I've committed to not miss out on the EOS ICO, and as a first step, I am trying to gather as much information as I can into this post to serve as a helpful resource for other people who also have finite time, but are interested in the EOS ICO.

What's contained in this post?

  • Chapter 1: What is EOS?
  • Chapter 2: What is the purpose of an ICO, and why is it important?
  • Chapter 3: How will the EOS ICO be structured?
  • Chapter 4: What is the ERC20 token standard, and why will it be used for EOS?
  • Chapter 5: Why will the Ethereum network be used for the EOS coin offering?
  • Chapter 6: How to participate in the ICO (for Dummies!)

Chapter 1: What is EOS?

The purpose of this post is primarily to focus on issues related to the Initial Coin Offering (ICO) of EOS , and not on specifics of EOS itself. Nonetheless, for those of you who are hearing about EOS here for the first time, EOS can be briefly described as follows:

EOS is a consensus blockchain operating system that provides databases, account permissions, scheduling, authentication, and internet-application communication to massively improve the efficiency of smart business development that uses parallelization to make possible blockchain scalability to millions of users and millions of transactions per second.

This description comes from my introduction to EOS post, which was a transcript of @dan's Consensus presentation and can be found here. If you are still confused, you can think of EOS as a decentralized operating system, which greatly simplifies the process of designing blockchain applications, and also performs all of the communication between the application and the decentralized computer, i.e. the blockchain.

EOS acts as the operating system which performs the communication between blockchain applications and the blockchain decentralized computer.

Chapter 2: What is the purpose of an ICO, and why is it important?

An Initial Coin Offering, or ICO, is an unregulated (as far as I know) method to raise funds for a new cryptocurrency venture. Because these types of fundraising are unregulated, many tech startups in the cryptocurrency space are beginning to use ICOs to raise funds while bypassing more heavily regulated approaches taken by venture capitalists and banks.

The typical approach that startup companies use for raising money through an ICO involves publishing a whitepaper that describes the project, as well as the needs and fundraising goals for the project, along with the distribution mechanism for the project coins. In the past, a common ICO approach has been to offer for sale a fixed number of coins at a fixed price over a certain fundraising window. If all of the coins are sold during the fundraising window, the ICO is considered a success, and coins are distributed, and if not all of the coins are sold, the ICO is considered unsuccessful, and the money is returned.

One major criticism of this ICO model is that it effectively requires pricing the tokens at below the perceived market value. If the tokens were initially priced above their perceived market value, it is likely that not all of the tokens would be sold, and the ICO would be unsuccessful. Since this ICO model effectively requires underpricing tokens, it leads to an economic situation in which the demand for tokens exceeds the supply. As with the recent Basic Attention Token (BAT) ICO, such a situation typically favors wealthy investors, especially if the ICO is hosted on a platform like Ethereum which requires gas transaction fees. This is because wealthy investors can pay exorbitant gas fees in order to guarantee their transactions will be selected by the miners. Thus, the typical ICO model has recently had the effect of concentrating tokens in the wealthy hands, who can turn around and sell their tokens for a profit, since they were originally sold at below the perceived market value to begin with.

Chapter 3: How will the EOS ICO be structured?

The EOS team will use a novel model for their ICO which effectively eliminates the particular advantage that wealthy investors possess that was described in the previous chapter. A draft (subject-to-change) EOS token sale smart contract was recently released on github. The corresponding release statement can be found here.

Before describing the rationale behind the EOS team's ICO model, I'll briefly describe the structure of the ICO (based on the current plan, which is subject to change). The EOS token will be an ERC-20 compatible token and will be sold on the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain.

The EOS Token Sale will be distributed daily over about 341 days. 1,000,000,000 (one billion) EOS tokens will be minted at the start of the sale. These tokens will be split into different rolling windows of availability. The tokens available in a window will be split proportionally to all the contributions made during the window period.
-block.one

The EOS team describes an example distribution schedule, in which an initial 5-day ICO period will be used to distribute 200,000,000 EOS. This period can be thought of as a 'traditional' ICO period, except there will be no cap in the amount of funds raised. However many funds are raised during the initial period, the 200,000,000 EOS tokens will be distributed proportionally to the funds raised. For example:

200,000,000 EOS are available during the window.
Bob contributes 1,000 ETH
Alice contributes 200 ETH
John contributes 1 ETH
Bob contributed 83.2639% of all ETH and receives 166,527,893.422148 EOS Tokens
Alice contributed 16.6528% of all ETH and receives 33,305,578.684430 EOS Tokens
John contributes 0.0833% of all ETH and receives 166,527.893422 EOS Tokens

If you read the Draft EOS Token Sale Contract, you will notice that I have modified this example to include another contributor, John, who contributes a relatively very small percentage of the total ETH to the ICO. The reasons I included John in this example are to first demonstrate that the EOS tokens are divisible, just like most other cryptocurrencies, but more importantly to show that there is practically no minimum contribution needed in order to participate in the ICO. No matter how wealthy or poor different contributors are, each one will receive the exact number of EOS tokens proportional to their contribution.

After this initial 5-day ICO period, there will be 350 consecutive 23 hour ICO periods in which 2,000,000 EOS tokens are distributed in each period. The distribution mechanism in these periods will be exactly the same as in the initial 5-day period, except that the duration of the period and number of coins distributed will be different. Another key difference for these periods is that after the initial 5-day period, EOS tokens will begin freely trading on exchanges, and price feeds will have already been established for the tokens.

With this established price feed, it is likely that the subsequent 23-hour minting periods will produce tokens at reasonably close to market value. If the total funds contributed to a certain ICO minting period would produce tokens at below market (exchange) price, it is likely that individuals will contribute more to the ICO period, driving up the price, and if the total funds contributed to an ICO period would produce tokens at above market value, individuals are unlikely to contribute more to the ICO period, and simply buy tokens on the open-market exchanges. This ICO model has the unique effect that the MAJORITY of network tokens (~70%) will be produced and sold AT market value, simply by virtue of the sale mechanism. This is in contrast to many other ICO models, such as BAT, in which ALL of the tokens are minted at below market value.

The total supply of EOS tokens is shown in the following figure.

Breakdown of the current plan for token distribution over the ICO period.

At the end of each ICO period, every contributor will receive private keys which allow them to claim their EOS tokens on the EOS blockchain. At the end of the ICO period, the EOS ERC-20 tokens will be frozen and non transferrable on the Ethereum network. At that point, the token distribution will be over, and the EOS blockchain will have no connection or relationship to the Ethereum network. It is unclear when the EOS blockchain will launch in this period. It is possible that the EOS blockchain will not launch until the end of the ICO period, and that all price activity during the ICO period will be through the placeholder ERC-20 tokens. Another possibility is that the EOS blockchain will launch after the 5-day initial ICO period so that individuals can immediately redeem their private keys and claim their EOS tokens, and all price activity will be based on trading of the real EOS tokens.

Rationale

Next I want to briefly elaborate on the design rationale behind this EOS distribution system. The primary goal of the EOS team was to ensure a fair and wide distribution of the tokens, which they aim to achieve by focusing on three objectives: equal opportunity to participate, broad awareness of the EOS network and ICO, and a fair and auditable distribution process.

  1. Equal opportunity to participate: By specifying a fixed number of coins to be distributed in each ICO window and no fixed cap on the number of funds to be raised, every single individual investor is given exactly the same equal opportunity to participate. Every contributor will receive EOS tokens exactly in proportion to the amount of funds that they contribute. This gives every individual the opportunity to achieve exactly the same return on investment (ROI) if the price pumps or dumps. Some individuals may be more intelligent and better able to determine when and if to participate in individual ICO windows, but every individual has the same OPPORTUNITY to participate.

  2. Broad awareness of the EOS network and ICO is highly desirable in terms of both fairness to cryptocurrency investors in general and in terms of ROI to EOS investors in particular. Broad awareness of the ICO is needed in order to give all cryptocurrency investors a fair opportunity to know about and participate in the ICO. This avoids situations in which only select few insiders are aware of a specific token sale, giving them a significant advantage in acquiring the network token. Broad awareness is also desirable to EOS investors, because it is necessary in order to drive demand for EOS tokens and adoption of the EOS network.

  3. Finally, the EOS team wants their ICO to use a fair and auditable distribution scheme, in which investors can verify their and others' contributions and know that they have received the fair and correct number of EOS tokens. This objective has proven slightly controversial, since the most obvious way to satisfy it is to run the ICO as an Ethereum smart contract. This has proven controversial to those who feel that the EOS team is snubbing the Bitshares and Steemit communities in lieu of the Ethereum platform (for which EOS hopes to be a major competitor). However, if you see the rationale behind this objective for running a fair and auditable ICO, the use of an Ethereum smart contract is likely the obvious, and only, viable option.

Chapter 4: What is the ERC20 token standard, and why will it be used for EOS?

The ERC20 token standard is a standard that describes all of the functions and events that an Ethereum token contract has to implement. Most recent, major tokens on the Ethereum blockchain have been designed to be ERC20-compliant. The purpose of using the ERC20 token standard is to make all of the ERC20 tokens more easily interchangeable. It also ensures that they can work with different decentralized applications (Dapps) that adhere to the standard. Essentially, every token issued on the Ethereum network can be considered a "sub-currency" of the Ethereum network (where Ether is the primary currency). The use of the ERC20 standard makes it easier for the compliant tokens to be natively supported by new projects. The standard ensures that tokens can be used across different Ethereum-based platforms and projects.

It is unclear how, or if, the EOS ICO will utilize this compatibility between ERC20-compliant tokens, or if they will simply use the ERC20 standard for the EOS smart contract in order to avoid re-inventing the wheel. Given that the purpose of the ICO smart contract is simply to account for investor contributions and distribute the keys for claiming tokens, I would imagine that the latter is more likely.

Chapter 5: Why will the Ethereum network be used for the EOS coin offering?

As I mentioned, the choice to use the Ethereum network to manage the ICO has been a contentious choice. Since EOS is intended to be a major competitor for Ethereum, some have seen this as a hypocritical choice. Others have seen this move as the EOS team spurning both Bitshares and Steemit users who have faithfully used and advocated Dan Larimer's previous projects. Many people were expecting the ICO to use the Bitshares decentralized exchange, a choice which would have brought tremendous exchange volume and served as the catalyst for tremendous gains in the Bitshares price.

However, the EOS team has clearly stated their reason for choosing the Ethereum network when they described the rationale behind the ICO model. Specifically, the ICO should be a fair and auditable process, with as little trust required as possible. If you believe that an ICO should be fair, auditable, and trustless, you have no choice but to use a decentralized smart contract blockchain to run the ICO, the largest, and by-far most popular of which is Ethereum. Of course the EOS team could have managed the ICO through Bitshares, or Bitcoin, or mailing cash in an envelope to a P.O. Box in Nigeria, but with those options it would not be possible to have a fair, auditable, and trustless token distribution model.

Of course, this decision will contribute sizeable, sustained volume and transaction fees to the Ethereum network, which will likely boost that platform, a fact which the EOS team is likely well-aware of. This actually tells me that the EOS team is very confident in the technological capabilities of their system, and that they are committed to a truly broad and fair distribution of the network tokens, since they are willing to confer large benefits to their primary competitor by doing so.

Chapter 6: How to participate in the ICO (for Dummies!)

Now I would like to briefly explain how to participate in the ICO. Personally, I have never used Ethereum, so I will be learning as I go in order to prepare myself as well. This will be a brief guide for total beginners. If you are already intimately familiar with Ethereum or have participated in other ICOs, you will likely be better off just following the participation guidelines posted here.

First, you need a personal, private Ethereum account. During the EOS ICO, the EOS tokens will be allocated to the Ethereum account which sends the Ether (ETH) to the token sale smart contract. Thus, if you send ETH to the EOS sale smart contract from an exchange account, your EOS tokens will be allocated to the exchange's ETH account, and you might not be able to ever recover your tokens. So, you need your own personal ETH account that you control.

For this introduction guide, I will use the MetaMask extension of the Google Chrome browser. MetaMask is an extension (currently only available on Google Chrome) that allows you to run Ethereum DAPPs in your browser without running a full Ethereum node. Most importantly for the purposes of this guide, MetaMask includes a secure identity vault, providing a user interface to manage your identities on different sites and sign blockchain transactions. So, on a Google Chrome browser, head on over to https://metamask.io and install the Chrome plugin. You can also view some of the MetaMask tutorials which may help with the following steps.

Once you've installed the plugin, you need to click on the MetaMask icon, accept the terms and conditions, and copy down the 12 seed words which can be used to restore all of your MetaMask accounts for your "vault". At this point, when I first installed MetaMask, it was initially set on the Ethereum Main Net. It is possible when you install the MetaMask plugin that it may be set to one of the test networks, such as the Kovan Test Network, which is what you would use if you wanted to participate in the test EOS Token Sale that is currently ongoing.

Next, we need to fund our account with some ETH tokens. For this I am going to use about 0.5 Steem Dollars which I have sitting in my Steemit account. First, I head over to https://blocktrades.us/ and setup a transaction of 0.5 Steem Dollars converting to ETH. For "your receive address", you should input the public ETH address for the account in your MetaMask vault. To do show, just click on the MetaMask plugin icon:

Then, click on the clipboard icon to copy your public ETH address:

For this example, my public address is 0x037CacD9FFa890b23492f4E88cf0b72df4dB3f9D. Yours should have a similar format. Finally, your trade setup in the blocktrades website should look something like this:

Once you click on "get deposit address", a box should pop up like this:

Now, just head over to your Steemit wallet page and send some Steem Dollars to the "blocktrades" account with the memo you received from the blocktrades website:

If you then wait a couple of minutes and check back with your MetaMask account, you should see a balance of ETH in your account:

Now that we have some ETH, we will be able to participate in the EOS token sale! In order to participate in the token sale, you will need to go to https://eosio.github.io/eos-token-sale while on the Ethereum Main Network. However, currently only the test sale is ongoing, so the page will probably not load unless you switch to the Kovan Test Network. You can go ahead and do so to get an idea of what the token sale user interface will look like. It is likely to still be updated, and some bug fixes are still in the works. If you switch to the Kovan Test Network, a page should load that looks something like this:

As you can see, the EOS Token Sale (the test sale) is currently ongoing. As I make this tutorial, we have just entered window #1, and so far 0.00 ETH have been contributed, so there is no effective price yet for this window. Once the real EOS token sale is underway, you will need to register an EOS public key, and you can then finally contribute your ETH to a given ICO window (as long as it is not closed), and claim your EOS after the window closes!

I will hope to give more detailed instructions about these final steps later once some issues with the public key registration are sorted out on the test sale.

I hope this has been informative, and I would love to hear your thoughts and feedback in the comments section below!

My strategy just like AGS, buy minimum in the first 5 days, then buy again after +100 days when only few cares about it.

Great strategy. I will probably be buying in a small amount in the first period and pick a handful of random other days to contribute as well. Thanks for reading :)

Hey, check the AGS chart, this was BTS crowdfunding http://agsexplorer.com/
Based on this results I think the 3rd day should be the best day to invest more.

Interesting, thanks I'll check it out. Definitely a good idea to have as many data points as possible :p

3rd day is the same as day 1, day 2, day 4, and day 5. The first 5 days are lumped into 1 period.

another way you can using google trends, alexa, semrush and just look at how much attention people are paying on a daily basis thats my plan

🙋Great post but perhaps I did a shorter article how to buy EOS tokens. As I know people don't like to read its short and saves YOU and ME time guys 💤❤ It describes also in how to invest generally in the ICO hype.

link: https://steemit.com/ico/@alfredox/how-to-invest-in-a-ico-token-hype

I will follow the same strategy. This also applies to IOTA and is - in my opinion - grounded on 2 basic premises:

  1. all tokens issued at once and sold (in stages or at once) to the public
  2. human nature: 2 weeks ago is already old news

Does anyone know when the real ICO launches?

On the 26th of June

$10 Free worth of Eth tokens!! https://goo.gl/9uD4Tn Authorship ICO you will receive 75 ATS tokens! just need an Eth Wallet!

I think there will be huge flow during first 5 days looking at the current ICO bonanza. immediately after 5 days there will be buyers in exchanges who cant use metamask. so that can even move the price further up. after that frenzy the minting in the following days will be like an "inflation" to EOS, keeping the price in exchanges not appreciate much. or it may even go down.. thats when I want to hit. but in the long run yes people will realize this is eth disruptor and market will be bullish. also, 1 year is a long term. maybe we will see some ICOs failing, some projects going south, even the global economy going south. We might even realize ico bubble burst in 1 year.

Because we do not know the future, I think it makes sense to also buy some in the 1st 5-day window. If this goes up like a rocket, at least you're in with something.

Could be yes. Maybe wait until last hours of 5 day window. If the valuation is ridiculous, opt out. If the valuation is reasonable, think more bullish.

Eaxctly my thoughts. It will be busy at the end of the 1st window.

I wonder if ether gas could get competitive at this time frame possibly delaying or dropping transactions the do not pay excessive gas?

thats a good probability but since it is distributed across a year we may see less of congestion

Good strategy. I think it definitely makes sense to dollar cost average your purchasing in to the ICO to take advantage of any dips and potential bursting of the current ICO mania. Definitely long term bullish though!

Great explanation, thanks for sharing!

Welcome back! How was the overseas sabbatical? :D :D :D

Perfect! I hope to start posting a lot more as soon as I can :D

Awesome! I will be on the lookout for your posts!

<3 <3 <3 <3 Thank you!

With EOS ICO we have plenty of time to invest.

I have been waiting for this ICO for so long and I am so excited. However, I tried to follow your instruction on Chapter 6 but the EOS token site only has the word "Loading..." on it

Switch to Kovan test net in Metamask

Thanks for reading! Like deaddy said, you must still be on the Ethereum Main Network. If you switch to the Kovan Test Net it should reload.

Wery interesting topic. I understood, that I can contribute any amount of ETH to get my chank of EOS ???
Becouse I have all most a zero =]
Followed to see news coming
=]

Minimum of 0.01 eth as per their site.

Thank you for the note !
=]

Thanks for reading! Yep, from what I understand you can contribute ANY amount of ETH, as long as you have enough to cover the gas fees that is :)

Thank you for reply !
Gas fees is it some kind of transaction fee ?
And yesterday I could see price for eos.
Also I opend walet in metamask on main server, after I made a transfer some ETH. But when I changed server to Kovan test, I saw nothing in my walet.
Can I open new walet on test network and then transfer my ETH to Kovan test network ?
Do you know when EOS ICO begins ?
=]

Gas fees are the transaction fees on the ETH network. ETH on the main network will not show up in your wallet on the test network. Sometimes the ETH on the Kovan test network are called KETH instead. You need to find a faucet for KETH, which you can get for free since they are just for testing purposes. I'm not sure when the ICO will launch, I don't think anybody knows yet.

Great article, I read through the process, but have to say i got lost at the point of Kovan Test Network and Meta mask. How long do you think it will be from the first pre-sale ICO to the EOS tokens popping up on an exchange, where people less skilled can purchase them? Hopefully Bitshares would bbe one of the first.

Hi, thanks for reading. I think asides from the first 5 day ico period the EOS tokens should quickly appear on exchanges where you should be able to purchase with bitshares. Its just a matter of the exchanges setting up the trades quickly.

how could the exchanges get eos token? eos website don't said that token could be trading after the first 5day.

I'm not sure where I found that information. It is located in one of the eosio steemit announcement posts I think.

thanks. one more question, have you joint the eos slack ? if you have, could you invite me? [email protected] I already signed but don't get invite letter so far.

I'm not on the slack, just the telegram.

good~

Thanks for reading!

Thanks I am definetly waiting in the wings for this one!

Thanks for reading, me too!

I'm thinking this will be the biggest ICO in history and tezos being second 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

I think it's almost guaranteed to be the biggest ever! :)

I hope they do the ICO right... It might freeze up ETH again when Bancor launched lol

ETH cannot cope with the shere number of ICOs on its network (Stratus as latest example). The test ICO is a brilliant move:

  1. Users prepare everything in advance and knoe how it works
  2. Ethereum capacity problems shoe the need for a better 'smart contracts' ecosystem: enter EOS

Good point, I'm pretty sure they wanted a long duration ICO partly so that the transaction load wouldn't clog the network.

Yeah, I think one of the reasons they wanted such a long duration ICO is because the transaction load on Ethereum will be more spread out, so it's much less likely to clog the network.

You hit the nail on the head @trogdor ... Even though with all the hype and coins going to flood the markets, I am going to have to still pick up some lol

Yeah, the problem is every other project sounds amazing, and I keep missing the ICOs.... This time I'll definitely pick up a couple though.

Just 26th playa 🙌🏼😂

NICE Finally found it, that i can understand the whole EOS thing more easily. Thanks!

Detailed post, fitting for a Dummies post! I will jump in on this ICO now that it appears there's an actual chance of making a profit. I don't enjoy ICO's nowadays cause I can't be there the moment the price opens and drops 99.8%

Thanks for reading! I know what you mean. I haven't participated in a single one as of yet. I meant to jump in on Peerplays and I just got incredibly distracted and completely forgot about it. I will definitely be jumping in on EOS, largely because I think the technological advance could be relatively ground breaking, but also partly just because I feel like the EOS team's goals for the distribution are reasonably well thought out and fair.

This will be my first time participating in an ICO as well. So far, the experience is good. My only complaint is that the payment popup window is confusing. There is no way to tell/easily calculate what the max ETH is that can be spend, taking into account fees. This should be as easy as hitting a 'max amount available' button.

Excellent post!

Some of my favorite parts:

three objectives: equal opportunity to participate, broad awareness of the EOS network and ICO, and a fair and auditable distribution process.

and

This actually tells me that the EOS team is very confident in the technological capabilities of their system, and that they are committed to a truly broad and fair distribution of the network tokens, since they are willing to confer large benefits to their primary competitor by doing so.

I'll definitely be sharing this post and resteeming it. You've done an excellent job giving enough background information and explaining important details so anyone can participate.

Somehow you avoided to give your opinions on strategy though... heheh. I'm still not sure if it's going to make sense to jump in during that first few days, wait until the market opens, or try the smart contract months later or maybe even a half a year later once we know more about what EOS is capable of. It's an incredible ICO, that's for sure. It wouldn't surprise me if they raise a billion bucks.

Thanks for reading, and thoughtful comments as always! It seems like I did avoid details about my strategy.... heheheh. Historically I am not a great investor, and I don't really have the game theory knowledge to lay out a strategy with a really solid theoretical backing. My gut feeling is to pick a certain amount to invest, put about 20-25% in the initial 5-day period, and distribute the other 75-80% over probably 5-10 of the 23 hour periods? Maybe just say contribute equal amounts over 10 different 23 hour windows and use a random number generator to pick the windows. It requires very little thought, and the dollar-cost averaging is likely to get a PRETTY good average price. Probably some people will be clever and come out way on top of me though :) haha

That sounds like a great strategy! I agree, dollar cost averaging will probably make the most sense over the long term. Of course, there's always that temptation to play the market a bit and try to get lucky. Even if the price settles around, say, $1 or so, if it trades for much higher than that in the beginning, there will be some great opportunities to increase your holdings, depending on your risk profile.

I wonder... will the price start high and essentially go down for next 365 days? Will investors be okay with that? Seems that was the pattern Steemit and Bitshares followed.

When does the EOS ICO start?

I don't think anyone knows that yet :p

Looks like they restarted their TEST run. I bought some test EOS yesterday in window #2, but now the current window is back to window #1.

I'll be sure to mention if I spot anything around the LIVE run.

Dear EOS.IO Community,

Today we are excited to announce our Token Distribution schedule, which will commence June 26th 2017 at 13:00 UTC.

Good question. I'm not sure about that. It will definitely have a high, sustained inflation rate, especially early on, which could exert downside pressure on the price, but then again those holding the tokens could be relatively strong hands that are long-term bullish. If I remember correctly, part of the issue with the big crash in Steem price was that the volume was super low when it started trading since it was pretty much all locked in Steem Power, which will be a different scenario from this one. It's hard to guess what will happen. Novel ICO model could have completely novel price action! :)

I finally got to try this out today and this is as far as I got.

I think you need to switch to the Kovan test network since currently only the test sale is ongoing.

I had to switch to main net then back to test net. I see the sale now. I'm just trying to get the kovan faucet to give me ether.

It is saying my account isn't certified.

I never used the faucet, someone sent me some that i contacted in the telegram. If you send me your public keth key I'll try to send you a little bit.

You made a really excellent tutorial post there @trogdor , thanks !!

Resteemed !

Steem on ! :)

Thanks, and thanks for reading!

I still couldn't find out what is the difference between EOS and Ethereum. It is a decentralized computer ... great, but that was Vitalik's idea all the time. What makes EOS better than Ethereum ? That's the question I would like to have an answer for.

EOS vs ETH

Thanks !

Parallel processing and speed.

:)

Thanks for reading. Like Dan said, the main advantage of EOS will be speed. EOS will be significantly faster than Ethereum due to the ability to use parallel processing combined with the Delegated Proof of Stake consensus mechanism, which is the only current consensus protocol that can actually handle modern needs of network applications.

Thanks @trogdor. I really needed a dummed down version to help me understand it better. I better get some ETH lined up :)

I will also try it out... Looks cool

Thanks for reading! I need to get mine lined up too :)

every piece of info... except the date of the ICO lol.

haha, I'm not sure if ANYONE knows that piece of information yet :D

Oh good, I thought I had missed the date somewhere, even read the guide twice and still couldn't find it. So I'm not blind, yay!

Just fyi, they just announced the start date... June 26th!

Thank you, I wasn't expecting it for a few months at least, now I need to find some funds, all these ICO's are putting quite the drain on my bank account.

This is a real masterpiece work my friend. Chapot.

Thanks for reading!

Upvoted and resteemed :-)

Thanks for reading! I definitely appreciate it :)

wow, ok now I have a much better understanding of the whole EOS ICO thing. Very informative post and easy to understand. Thanks for clearing some thing up for me :) I'm following you

Thanks! and thanks for reading!

This ICO will be interesting! Seems like every ICO tries a different structure to maximize and one-up the previous one.

It is looking that way. I think this one has a decent idea which is unique and at least solves a lot of the problems people have seen in other recent ICOs. Thanks for reading!

Good post and interesting to read ....

Thanks for reading!

Thanks again ... hope we can share each other ...

Very good posting and greatly informative. I have one question about the distribution of tokens in each window.

In the example above, 1201 ETH are collected from Bob, Alice and John. I am wondering if they will receive a different number of EOS ERC20 tokens depending on who contributed first.

For example, Bob will receive a different number of EOS ERC20 tokens depending on how many ETH contributions made before his contribution in the same window?

In my understanding, the distributions will be made at the end of each window, so it would not be matter when to contribute as long as the contribution is made in the same window.

Order of contribution does not matter.

Thank you for the reply :)

Thanks for reading! Like Dan said, the order of the contributions doesn't matter in a given window.

Thank you for confirming Dan's reply :)

This guide is very helpful. Will go and get the book.

Thanks for reading!

You are welcome. Am following you. Do follow me back for positive posts. By the way, I went to the bookstore in Kuala Lumpur but they do not have your book.

@positivesteem: Hehe.... it's not a real book. It's just a digital ebook post.

Hi thanks for this special post !! Is it also possible to use Jaxx as private account?

I'm not sure about that since I haven't used Jaxx before. I think as long as you control the private and public keys for your ETH address, it should be possible.

I think jaxx is not erc20 eth address, as it uses shapeshift. Best to go with their recommendation-mask or myether

This is very easy to understand and usefull info on the EOS ICO. Thank you very much!

Thanks for reading!

I need to read this several times to understand, but great info. Thanks for putting it out for us. Definitely appreciate the dummies down version, for those of us that need it. Full Steem Ahead...

Thanks for reading! I try to keep things simple, mostly because I'm trying to understand too! :)

It can boggle the mind for sure.

Wow Wow Wow...This looks really interesting. Need to browse more on this topic. Thanks for sharing My Friend. All the best.

Thanks for reading! There is definitely a lot of information out there, I tried to condense as much as I could.

wow... There's plenty to read on your posts...
@pocketechange

Thanks for reading!

Awesome post, definitely resteeming this! Very helpful content, I intend to make this my first ICO. Hopefully I don't miss it like all the others!

Agreed! This will be my first ICO as well. Thanks for reading.

Totally appreciate all the information that you have provided. Thank you so much

Thanks for reading!

Very nicely done, thank you.

You have a new follower!

Awesome! Thanks for reading.

when is launch?

I don't think that anyone knows at the moment, maybe just Dan himself ;)

haha and maybe he doesn't even know!

FYI, launch is set for June 26th! Much sooner than I expected.

Holy cow that is only 4 days away... Do you have a strategic plan for this ICO? (PS Thanks for the heads up, I appreciate that!)

It's hard to say. Since I am going to be a relatively small investor, I will probably wait until towards the end of the 5 day initial period and see how things are looking.

why and how to register an EOS public key?

Honestly, I am not sure about that. That is the one thing which is slightly confusing/bothering me. Somewhere it sounded like you could register your Steem public keys, but I have no idea why that would be necessary or beneficial.... It seems to me like you should only need the appropriate ETH addresses.

You can use steem or bitshares keys or our eos key generator

Thanks, Dan. I think there might be an issue with the register EOS key function on the test sale. When I just tried it, the screen briefly said "Generating key...", which then disappeared, and the screen still indicated no public EOS key registered.

I wonder if there could be provisions made to buy EOS with OPEN.ETH which is available on Bitshares at https://bitshares.openledger.info/market/OPEN.ETH_BTS

You mentioned that some Steemit and Bitshares people preferred to use those platforms in the ICO and maybe it is possible to use Bitshares via OPEN.ETH. Just throwing this out there without really knowing if it is viable!

Excellent post about EOS and I look forward to further instructional guides from you!

Thanks for reading! Honestly I have never used Bitshares at this point, and I have been meaning to learn more about the Bitshares DEX and how exactly the tokens work and trade. I have a feeling that you are right if the OPEN.ETH can interact directly with the Ethereum network and not through an intermediary. There might be a difficulty if the OPEN.ETH do not correspond to a personal ETH address.

Resteemed for brand new people can see the post. We need posts that teach new people here what certain things are and you did exactly that! thank you

Awesome, thanks so much!

wow that s a lot of details i m new here so WOW anyway nice post

Thanks for reading, and welcome to Steemit!

Excellent post. Thanks for taking the time to put this together!

No problem, and thanks for reading!

Hmmm 100,000,000 for founders seems a bit much. 1 billion tokens will be at a several hundred million dollar valuation if not a billion out the gate. Does this really merit an immedia te $10-100 million payout?

Good point, I think I saw somewhere that the 100,000,000 for the founders will be locked for a certain time period (maybe a year?) so they can't be traded. I'm not sure if I'm correct about that or not.

great Video.Really helpful.thank you for sharing..:)

Thanks for reading! I'm glad it was helpful.

Great post, usually people that buy the first day win a lot of money, but afterwards, the price settles down a bit; that's the perfect time to buy again.

Thanks for reading!

Really really looking forward to this, Just hope i make it in time of the open window! Loading..........

Thanks for reading! I think we are probably still weeks or months away from the launch of the sale, so hopefully we will all have time to get ready.

How long until you think it starts?

Good question. I haven't seen any information that would give me an idea about the start date. The test sale is currently running, and I would guess that will operate for a week or two, and perhaps go through several more iterations? I would guess the real sale will launch before the end of the year, possibly within 2-3 months? That's a total guess though.

I'm saving for it.

The longer the better.

Thank you for an awesome post. Helps understand Eos a lot more.

They could simplify the ICO process, especially the "send it from a private wallet" part. That's going to catch a lot of noobs I think.

Thanks for reading. I understand what you are saying. It's one of the challenges of technologies based on cryptography and blockchain tech, trying to balance security and usability. Luckily, one of the main advantages of EOS will be that it significantly improves app developers ability to find this balance by handling the communication with the blockchain and also providing the behind the scenes databases and account cryptography.

Never heard about EOS before, thank you!

No problem, thanks for reading!

Does anyone know if you can use ETH in your coinbase account to purchase EOS?

Thanks for reading! I'm not entirely sure, do you own the private and public keys to your ETH address? Personally I would not risk it, and transfer the ETH you want to use to a MetaMask address, which will also allow you to use the provided interface for the ICO.

Thank you, very helpful!

Thanks for reading!

thanks for this! 2 questions: When will it begin -and- is it true that quantum computing will make blockchain tech insecure?

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

I don't think it has been announced when the ICO will begin. My guess would be within 3 months from now, but that is a guess. As far as quantum computing, I have only done a little bit of reading in this area, but it seems there are quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms, so my feeling is that this issues is probably over-hyped.

Thanks for the primer. I am trying to learn as much as I can to invest in this funding. Your help is much appreciated. EOS seems like it is a game-changer in the block-chain world. And Dan does seem to be THE MAN.

Thanks for reading! I definitely agree it could be a game changer!

Awesome article, you made it so easy to understand. Following and up voted. I think EOS is going to be a game changer for block chain technology and make a lot of people some life changing money. Thanks again!

Also this coder explains how:

Was a good review by Ivan on Tech. He posted a follow up - playing devils advocate:

Thanks for reading, and thanks for the link! I definitely agree it can be game changing.

Ivan is a wonderful guy at explaining the Crypto world, I watch his daily videos.

Thank you for posting, great article new beginners. Followed and upvoted! :)

Thanks for reading!

This was incredible helpful! thanks!

Thanks for reading! Glad I could be helpful.

Thank you for sharing your information! Could I translate this article into Korean? I want to let people know how to get involved in EOS.IO ICO. :D

Sure, go ahead. Thanks for reading.

Great information. It appears you are quite knowledgeable on EOS. Perhaps you might know this. If I were to purchase some EOS from a third party how might it be held? I have been trying to understand but I don't know of any wallet that can be used. I have an Ethereum account but I don't know how to use it for holding EOS in 3rd party transactions. I suspect that perhaps there is a way, but I am slow to catch on.

Honestly, I'm not exactly sure about that. As far as I know the erc20 coins all trade on the ethereum network. I think they are basically linked to your Eth public account. Perhaps someone else can help out better. I decided not to participate because of the restriction on the US, and I have just been waiting to buy in until the price comes down. Maybe I will post a tutorial once I decide to participate.

Very good, luke. I'm impressed you get ideas through easier than some CEOs... not mentioning any in particular...

Thanks for reading! I tried to keep it simple and condense the information as much as possible. I'm learning as I go, so I have to keep it simple for me to understand it too haha :)

Well done! I ran an Eth node when they first started, but abandoned it when life got busy... KICKS SELF IN ARSE... but no regrets. It is cool to learn new platforms and there are more opportunities than any one individual has the time and energy to pursue. Thanks for the great how-to.

haha, yeah I would say I have a small pocket full of regrets related to all things crypto... but oh well, we'll come out on top in the end! Thanks for reading.

Something I'm worried about not mentioned herein is, can U.S. citizens not buy in? On eos.io, under Get EOS, it says, at least for me, "US-IP detected, participation not allowed". Now I know no one can participate yet, but why specify US-IP? Does this mean what I think it means?

It seems that in order to participate you must check a box that says you are not a US citizen. I don't know the legal implications of this, nor the reasons, but it must involve avoiding US regulations of some kind. Of course, you COULD use monero to amonymize your purchase of ETH and use a VPN plus Tor to spoof your IP and it would be practically impossible to link it to you, as far as I understand. I have no idea what kind of legal implications that would have for you.

Good to know! Thanks!

If I put for example, $100,000 I'll mimic eos distribution model. I'll put in $20,000 in the initial sale. Then the rest in equal intervals throughout the year.

I think that will be my strategy as well. Thanks for reading!

WOW, have been searching everywhere for many questions I had about EOS, as far as more info on the company itself and how to get setup for the upcoming ICO. Glad I found your post as this info on future currencies is sometimes hard to come by. Anyways, thanks for the help!

Thanks for reading, glad I could help!

a very detailed presentation which will take some time for me to fully digest if i'm capable which truthfully i'm not sure about 😉. i may have to call on reinforcements to completely wrap my head around this. thanks for the enlightenment and onto our next evolutionary phase. i seriously need to pass this onto some old friends so they can take advantage of the world to come

Haha, I understand what you're saying, it definitely takes time to wrap the mind around.

Now if only all my picks didn't end up being Romanian scammers ..

lol, same here

Looks like those shifty gypsies have moved on from their credit card fraud days.

@trogdor, I'm a little confused on the ico set up. I think the design will prevent the token price to shoot up in the market, at least during the 351 day period while they are still distributing 2 000 000 tokens daily. If i would wish to acquire tokens, why should i buy in the market if there is a chance to get more tokens by joining the 23hr ico period? Specially so if i see that there are less contribution that day.

It depends. You have to compare the expected price on the market with the expected price on the ICO. As an extreme example, if no one contributes any ETH to one of the 23hr periods, you could accumulate all 2,000,000 tokens for 0.01 ETH, which would likely be a FAR better price than you could ever get on the market.

Exactly. And it runs for 300plus days! I'm about 2 months old in crypto so this ico design is new to me ^_^

excellent article! but I have a question, in you article it said " Another key difference for these periods is that after the initial 5-day period, EOS tokens will begin freely trading on exchanges",well I wonder how do you know this ? I read the eos website and didn't find this part?

I'm pretty sure that Dan either mentioned this in one of his posts, or it is mentioned somewhere on the eosio blog on Steemit.

Can I buy eos from markets? What's difference?

Hey, thanks for the question, you can buy EOS on the markets, or you can still participate in the ICO which is still ongoing as far as I know.

@trogdor Fantastic read! Thank you very very much!

Thanks for reading!

Excellent article. Thanks.

Thanks for reading!

Hey everyone just found this and also fairly a newbie so a couple questions. When to buy, where to buy and how much to buy out of gate?
Thank you God bless EOS ...it sounds like our answer to make government obsolete without a shot.!

So just my opinion, but I am holding out to buy any EOS at the moment. It's a total guess of course, but with all the ICO hype, and the fact that there is nearly a year to go before any blockchain is actually launched, I'm pretty sure there will be at least several good opportunities to buy in during the coming year.

It seems every ICO that hits the market plunges so it would seem like a good idea to wait 3 days after it comes out so you don't end up holding the bag.

excellent. lets see where this goes. I believe I will watch from the sideline to start

Very informative!!

A month later and it really had a good reception ! Ethereum developer involvement perhaps ! Great post ! Keep it up !

Great detailed account. I recently went through the ICO process for WAGERR, XFCCOIN, SUPERIORCOIN, CIVIC and STATUS. STATUS I missed out on thanks to another one of coinbases turns, I'm still waiting for CIVIC to show up.

Every ICO seems to throw something different in, though I did like the fact that CIVIC ate their own dogfood and used their platform to validate your identity for the ICO. Couldn't understand the volume of complaints, what better way to start off successfully than have a bunch of users who are invested in the product using it.

Keep on burninating ;)

Maybe this has been asked before. If it has sorry. Maybe you can provide a link. But what's the best way to acquire EOS ICO in the US since it's obviously not available to US residents? I've tried and did download torproject browser but have issues with proxy? I'm not real tech savvy. Thanks for response.

email me [email protected] and I will give you some instructions how to

##EOS go live date!

Dear EOS.IO Community,

Today we are excited to announce our Token Distribution schedule, which will commence June 26th 2017 at 13:00 UTC.

ICO bubble Madness: Addy Crezee #BlockShow #BlockiTalki

EOS is keeps popping up on my radar as an interesting project. This line right here says it all with perfect clarity.

EOS acts as the operating system which performs the communication between blockchain applications and the blockchain decentralized computer.

I missed out on the ICO, but still managed to pickup some tokens afterwards. EOS and BAT were some major ones on my radar. It seems EOS had a 30% rise today, and now coin market cap is suggesting it's undervalued by at least $2.

What are your thoughts on this. Has their been any recent news or developments?

I'm really at a loss here, do I need an EOS wallet? I have never participated in an ICO so I really have no idea.

I'm glad i didn't miss this, can't wait for the price to fly to the mooooon

Amazing guide! Your clear explanation has motivated me to participate as well, and I am absolutely new to cryptocurrency, without any holdings whatsoever.

I also have the comparison you've done between EOS and Ethereum on my read-list. Followed!

thank you! I'll be watching your posts next week...

Awesome, simple and comprehensive!

the eos.io faq recommends metamask or MyEtherWallet and specifically lists several wallets that should not be used, including jaxx and exodus.

I just got my Ledger Nano s. haven't set it up yet. Anyone know whether this will work as an ether wallet address for the purpose of this ICO?

Hey, loved the article. I'm lost my friend, I have EOS sitting in Meta Mask since 2018 just newly rediscovered after a two year break. Why can't I do anything with them? I know they came from the ICO, but I cannot transfer out or swap, they just sit. Idea's?
Peace,
Pappy

Good article and explanation of the upcoming EOS ICO. I like the way the ICO is, potentially, negating all of the whitelisting that's been going on recently. Whether this approach will overvalue the tokens or not is something that will be very interesting to see.

I'm definitely looking to take part in the ICO myself, but undecided as yet just how much I'm in for...

Very interesting. Thanks for the information

really nice post, Look over me would be happy

https://steemit.com/@wolfoftrading

Great post, thank you :)
As far as investment strategy in this ICO I'm wondering if there is any value in investing early. My understanding is that after one year coins will be distributed totally and proportionally to investment amount. I believe there is not preference or advantage given to early investors.
If this is true, shouldn't we all just wait until the last moment to invest, when we have seen the viability and value of EOS?
Am I misunderstanding something here?

Why can't people based in America not participate in this ICO?

why not just go straight to an exchange like IOTA did? Why go through all this risky mumbo jumbo that only a handful of people dare participate in?

Very informative! Resteemed.

@trogdor do you know when the Test Ico ends? https://eosio.github.io/eos-token-sale/ doesn't work for me anymore. https://eos.io/distribution/ works, but only with the main ethereum network..

I'm not sure about that, I guess it has probably already ended since the real ICO starts in three days :)

boo... was waiting to start testing tonight.

So it has been announced that EOS tokens will be listed on Bitfinex July 1st. Theoretically everyone should be able to calculate the $ or ETH value of 1 EOS before that happens because the number of ETH contributed is being listed. Right now it looks like 1 ETH will get you 617 EOS. Will that have a strong impact on what happens to the price it trades at on Bitfinex - especially since another 700M EOS will be flooding onto the market through the rest of the year. Already this represents a huge ICO in $ value - close to $100M and we still have another day to go plus another 700M tokens. Perhaps it being listed on Coinmarketcap will generate a flurry of activity and drive the price up further? There certainly wont be an incentive to dump at anything less than the price paid for it.

I'm personally thinking if the price continued at the phase 1 investment level we're talking almost $1B, probably much more with even a modest bump on the price after listing on a market. Imagine that a lot of US people who played by the rules and didn't contribute ETH to the ICO illegally will want to buy it fair and square on Bitfinex. I can imagine there are whales who will want to do that - ones worth too much to risk commiting a criminal act for a quick buck on EOS.
Anything close to $1B by the end of the year will put EOS firmly in the top ten coins without even a working system... amazing. Although to be fair we should start to see some parts rolling out this year - assuming it all works and isn't as some people think, I giant scam on Ponzi scheme.

Anyone have a good guess on what happens next?

Ample of information in a single post. Worth reading.

@trogdor This is exactly what i was looking for. I don't have any experience with ethereum so it is a little bit confusing. Your tutorial is helping me a lot. I don't have much to invest but i want to be a part of the EOS token sale.

I will follow this step by step and hopefully i'll be able to get my hands on some EOS tokens :)

I'm 1000% sure it will be a big success because Daniel Larimer a genius and seems like everything he's touching turns into gold :)

Waiting 100 days or more could be a good strategy if price of ETH continues to fall (thus buying more EOS per ETH) - but if EOS gains momentum and/or price of ETH goes up, getting more EOS early could be a better strategy than late 2017 or early 2018.

If your'e excited for this ICO, Reply "YES". (lets get it)

Thanks for the article
