The apostle John was the most beloved disciple of Jesus, and all his writings generally have the same literary style, a unique style that differs from all the other authors of the New Testament, Luke, Mark, and Matthew. Due to the brevity of the third epistle of John, this wonderful and unique style cannot be fully observed.
However, this epistle of John makes great emphasis on the spiritual love (Agape) towards the brothers in faith and the life in communion. The apostle John in his third epistle put a man named Gaius as an example of the Christian life, the epistle does not specify which church it is addressed to but it is likely that it was a church in Asia Minor.
With these words the epistle begins, congratulating the brother Gaius:
"To my dear friend Gaius, whom I love in the truth.
Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well. It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth" 3 John 1:1-4.
As the epistle teaches, the apostle made great emphasis on that fidelity together with the truth, because that is how the love of Jesus is manifested: "Love your neighbor as yourself" Mark 12:31. And this is very important because without the truth what remains is heresy, the teaching of the error.
The truth is an essential value in the teachings of Jesus, because the word of God, the wisdom inspired from above, is the truth itself. Jesus himself said it in other words: "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" John 14:6. The adherence to the truth as mentioned by John to Gaius is the foundation of the faith itself, and for the truth all those who believe in Jesus are free people.
