It's not typical for most horse racing events to put fashion and style top of mind for the audience, but Vodacom Durban July does an exceptional job of showcasing fashion. Not only do the spectators make a spectacle about style, but they also feature a three month exclusive fashion design contest in featuring local fashion designers on the big stage. First through third prizes are awarded, and these students' careers are jumpstarted in the world of fashion design from this prestigious fashion event.

This year, Georgina Brink took home top honors for the best young designer at Vodacom Durban July 2018. The Durban University of Technology student created a garment from the inspiration of her South African heritage. "I took the theme 'It is Time' and used it to look back in time and connect with where we come from," said Brink. "I wanted to celebrate our diversity by bringing it all together. The design has key elements from her Dutch heritage as well as bits and pieces of stylized paintings and ancient crafts.

It has been a grueling three-month process for all of the student designers, getting their concepts and theories into a physical garment to showcase in front of a panel of judges. Second place finish was Andile Nsele and third honors went to Nhlosenhle Cele. The Vodacom Durban July Fashion contest is a huge platform for these young designers to jumpstart their career into the fashion world.
