Irán cayó contra España en un partido difícil para la Roja por el cerrojo impuesto por el rival. Prácticamente para los dirigidos por Fernando Hierro fue imposible quebrar una defensa de dos líneas de 4 y 6 jugadores dentro del área, y solo un rebote en las piernas del siempre matador Costa hizo que la pelota pudiera entrar en el arco iraní.
Con este resultado España empata a puntos con Portugal en la primera posición de su grupo y se definirá ese liderato en la última jornada de fase de grupos.
